East Ocean View???
My wife and I are considering a furnished rental for 6 months located on East Ocean View Ave. at 12th Street. We've heard everything from that area being the absolute worst for crime to it being problem free since many new nice homes have been built there and the area has been cleaned up. We're moving from another state so we're going in blind so any information would be much appreciated! Also, what are your thoughts on the East Beach area around 25th Street? Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

I assume you mean 12th bay, right on ocean view ave you should be ok . Is it a single family or apartment. East beach is a nice area with million dollar homes, if you have a rental choice definetly take 25th bay, restaurants, marina, golf cart community. give me the exact address you are looking at and I can check it out for you, our office is right down the street

My advice is to find somewhere else. The plan WAS to clean up the area, push out the crime, and make it a nice new neighborhood with lots of pricey new homes, and bring in some new wealthy citizenry. Buildings were razed, homes were built, and people moved in. But the crime is still there, and people are leaving as fast as they can. And the crime will not go away unless they raze every single shanty/shack 'hood in the area (and there are many, MANY of these little crime-havens still there). Obviously that is not going to happen.
Here are a few articles I found on the 'net that you should check out. HTH.

I agree with Chessiemom. If you go to google maps and put in the address, you can look at a 360 degree street map and you will see what she means. Vagrants walk the street day and night and there IS lots of crime. We looked at the area, but my husband didn't feel like it was safe for me. If you go about 10 minutes further to Virginia Beach, there are several condo rentals off Shore Dr. that are a lot safer.

Steve , I can show articles about crime in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, etc. Bring up crime in East Beach and I must have missed it. bring up a 360 street map of 25th bay and let me know if you see anything but million dollar homes and a beautiful neighborhood. There are problems in ocean view just like every other city. I live there and I have a business there, I had a business in a nice neighborhood in Virginia Beach and I was burglarized 3 times, and it never made the paper.

Oceanview
Well I will just say that I have lived in Hampton Roads for 26 years. I never figured I would end up living in Norfolk (Wiloughby Spit are), But what it comes down to is that it is still Norfolk and Norfolk has one of the worst crime rates out there. Check this site outModerator cut: link removed, linking to competitors sites is not allowed and you can see for yourself. Yeah there is a chance for crime any where you go, but I personally would much rather live some where that it is less likely to happen, and thats not norfolk. There is alot of nice places around the area but you wont really get a feel for what it is that you are gonna like until you get in the car and ride around and check out the area. My advice, if you decide to move to Norfolk becareful where you move. Otherwise stay away from Norfolk. I wish I had, lol.

EOV not so good
East Ocean View wasn't the nicest neighborhood to live in. I spent the majority of my naval career in Norfolk, and lived in EOV from 1996 to 2003. I have not been there in person since 2007, when I drove to Hampton Roads to see some old friends, but many of the same run-down homes and apartments are still there. There is still crime, but fewer prostitutes than in the 1980s.
In 2003, I moved to Azalea Garden Road, which was much nicer.

i live in E. Ocean View and I love it. neither myself, nor my spouse or any of our neighbors has ever had a problem living here. I often forget to lock my home, my car, and have on several occasions forgot to close my automatic garage door, but never had anyone take anything. The closest thing to crime I have experienced is my husband's beat up car being egged around Halloween.
I have wonderful neighbors and I enjoy walks on the beach everyday after work. I respect other people's opinions, but in my experience it has been great living here. You should check it out for yourself and decide.
