zar, we are a strong military area, and most of the military members, spouses, and kids (as I am a grown military kid) have relationships with the military credit unions. I am a member of both ABNBFCU (amphib base naval base Federal Credit Union) and Navy Federal Credit Union. there are many more as well. That said, there are the banks stated above and a couple of smaller local banks, like Bank of Hampton Roads.
Shop around.

Coming from NY/NJ area I looked at various banks in the area for both personal & business use. If you are looking for pesonailized service & not be know just as an account numnber avoid: Wachovia & Bank of America.
Down here there is Towne Bank, BB&T & Monarch Bank. I chose BB&T because they have a bit larger commercial footprint, but they have met my needs in checking, home equity lines, & business banking. Plus there are a lot of branches in the southeast as far down as Fla. and as far north as Delaware.

I'm a member of Chartway Federal Credit Union and have never had a problem or complaint. They have friendly service, fantastic programs and convenient hours.

I bank at BB&T and have been very happy with them. There's no fees on any of my accounts, no minimum balance on checking or eSavings, so there's really nothing more I could ask from them. It also seems like there's a local branch in a ton of small towns in Virginia and North Carolina. As others have mentioned, they're also available in a range of states, it's just that I mainly travel in VA and NC.
If you choose a credit union, make sure that your deposits are insured. It also seems like some have tighter restrictions on certain items like cashing checks. I know a buddy of mine complains that his credit union won't let him cash or deposit a check in his wife's name, I'm not sure which Credit Union they use though. Just something to be aware of.

I travel for my work and never worry about not finding a Wachovia or Wells Fargo. I even have my debit card set up for a way2save account and holds some extra cash for when I really need it. No problem transferring funds online, it's just a click and stating how much you want. I've been a member of NFCU for over 25 years, but Wachovia gives me alot more freedom with my money when I'm on the road.
