The weather has always been an issue with travel. Ice storms are the worse, but that is just to be safe. Being a military community, we have several driving personalities on the road. Taking the back ways is much safer and quicker at times of interstate back up.
Going to the Mt. Trashmore area at the bottleneck, jump off at Newtown South and take Princess Anne to Baxter Rd.
Centerville area...Jump off at Military South exit and take Indian River. There may be stoplights, but at least the traffic is moving.
This is coming from Norfolk.

You have to remember, the way the land was way back, when the interstate was designed, had to go a certain route. It is what it is, so they say.

No Va Bch has not signed on to the light rail project, and I hope they never do....

Actually they have. They've been given 1.5 million to study how it will be run and the advantages of it. It was rejected nine years ago, but has alot more support now that norfolk has actually started building.

Was trying not to get this thread to far off from the questions the OP asked but I guess we have already accomplished that so I will reply to your post......
You are talking about a study?
I dont want to sound mean but a study means nothing......heck no one in this city can even go to the bathroom without a study first being done ................A study is done for just about every capital improvement project the city looks at, be it something they want to get into their next years budget or something they have in their five year forecast FY2010-2014 (which light rail is not in FYI). Heck just next year alone the city of Virginia Beach is facing a 81 million deficit and the State of Virginia is facing a 4 billion dollar shortfall and they both expect the deficit to continue and grow larger for the next several years........
So a study being done and signing on to the project is night and day difference...
Yes the soon to be new mayor is for light rail but after he has a chance to look at some of the projected numbers I think even he will back off until the economy greatly improves.....latest numbers for light rail in Va Bch is one billion dollars and that is in todays dollars if it was started now......wait another 5+ years or so and the number will be even greater.....look at Norfolk, their cost is close to 25% more than originally planned already and they have not even laid the first piece of track yet and that is just for the starter line that does not include anything else, you can bet their cost will continue to rise before it is all said and done

I can get from the Sandbridge area to Downtown in about 40 minutes, but coming home, now that's a different story. It takes me almost an hour, and god forbid, someone should get as much as a flat tire along 264. Everyone has to stop, take out their lawn chair and a snack and look at what is going on. And what's with that curve just before Newtown Road? It's a parking lot every day. OK I'm through whining.

I hear ya. I keep my RV out in Sandbridge, but I don't use the interstate anymore. I just go straight down Holland to Princess Anne.

Doesn't that just kill ya???? Anytime I hear there's an accident on I-XXX eastbound, I can count on a back up westbound. You'd think after 12 years of driving from Pungo to Norfolk, I'd get used to it.
$1.5 MILLION, to STUDY light rail ???... what a scam. It will be as useful as the HOV. --Bumper-to-bumper traffic going to (or from in PM) base, and you watch 2 cars go by you in the HOV. Just open them up going west in the AM, and east in the PM.

They do open them up. I jump up there going to the base in the morning and right back up there in the afternoon on the way home. I'm glad they open it to all traffic, cuz it sure cuts back on the bottlenecking at the interchange at 0530.

get off at Newtown and take the backway. To get away from the interchange heading west, head north on newtown, then west on weslyan drive to Northhampton and then back up on the interstate just before Military exit.
Heading east, I get off at Newtown south, take Princess Anne to Baxter road to Independence.
