I was wondering if anyone can give me some information on the city of Hampton. I was wondering what part of the city is safer/nicer and what parts you may want to avoid. We've been up there a few times but not enough to get a good feel for the city. I want to gather information for someone who is considering a job there. Also, for those who live on the pennisula, what are the best places to live there?

In hampton, stay north of Mercury Blvd. The areas north of Todds Lane especially have nicer neighborhoods as you get closer to York county

Stay clear of Rip Rap Road, most of Buckroe (sorry, but it's really gone downhill!), Lasalle near Pembroke Ave.

I agree with the Fox Hill, Beach Road, and Howell Farms areas. I used to live in Old Fox Hill (Hall Road) and never had any problems.

well, best is a relative term, but in general besides hampton which i mentioned above, in NN- anything along the river from Hilton to Denbigh plantation is great, as well as kiln creek, port warwick and oyster point in general. most of poquoson and york county is nice as is williamsburg

Avoid Shell Rd, anywhere below Mercury Blvd (Wythe a possible exception), anywhere near I-664. Areas of Hampton i like are Magruder Blvd, Big Bethel Rd north of Todds Ln and Riverside/Tide Mill Rd. I'm glad i'm not the only one who thought the area around Buckroe Beach looked a little ghetto.

If your friend has kids, i would highly recommend York County which has the best school system in Hampton Roads.

Best on the peninsula, but VA Beach is better especially if special education is needed.

parts of buckroe area can be ghetto, but the beach itself is nice, the homes along the water are well-kept, and of course salt ponds is pretty upscale

There are other areas on the Peninsula that you could check into too. Newport News, Yorktown, Smithfield. They are not that far from Hampton.

I have a coworker who has lived in Fox Hill years and still loves it. She's really close to the bay.

I like Chesapeake Ave. But it's quite a bit out of my reach.
