Well, my answers will be biased since we live here. This is such a subjective question.. There isn't a clear cut answer. Williamsburg is a small town in comparison to the other localities. For safety ( Williamsburg ) , health care ( since we are small we don't have the abundant choices for health care. You might have to go to Newport News for certain specialists. Southside proably ranks higher for that category. Classical music We do have the Willamsburg Symphonia ,and a classical radio station WBACH . Irish Eyes mentioned Ferguson center only 25 minutes away. ( nice restaurants We haev numerous good/ excellent restaurants in Wiliamsburg but Southside has a more. and beauty? ( In the eye of the beholder) but take a drive down Colonial Parkway or around the area. I would vote Williamsburg.
If you are comparing values to NC or SC cities it is more expensive here as Erma stated though it is much more reasonable here than Northern VA or the Northeast..

I'd say Williamsburg. You're close enough to get to any beach in a decent amount of time. Williamsburg is a beautiful area, especially compared to any other part of Hampton Roads.

How did you decide on VA? We were in FL 15 years and came up here what will soon be 5 years ago. We have family in Northern VA and friends here. But my boss at the hospital where I worked in FL said that the true native and long time working Floridians retire in...the Carolinas.

Prolly cuz the cost of living is more compatable to the retiree income and there's the wonderful fishing lakes, fresh black dirt for gardening and those quaint lil houses. Gonna get me one of dem der houses on the lake one day when I'm ready to r'tire.

We don't golf or have hobbies that would steer us to one town versus another.
I know it's very subjective, but which town would you recommend for safety, health care, classical music, nice restaurants and beauty? We don't want too much winter so probably won't look further north than Williamsburg area. Any recommendations will be most helpful. Or would you leave VA for somewhere else in retirement? If so, where would you consider in mid-Atlantic area? Thank you!
We retired and moved to Elizabeth City. NC does not tax our retirement and we are still close to VA Beach as well as the Outer Banks. The land wasn't bad price wise either and our modular home is wonderful. We highly reccomend the New Land area just off highay 17 and 158.
