My husband and I are thinking about buying a modular. We have 4 kids and would like to have a conservative mortgage. Have you guys heard anything about Clayton Homes in Newport News. They seem to sell mobile homes, but you can upgrade them to modular for $12,000...does anyone have any knowledge about this? Is their customer service, product, etc, good? I think I would be happy with anything that doesn't depreciate in value like a mobile home does.

Thanks!!!

The only thing I know about them is that they have been around for many many years. My 82 year old mother in law had a Clayton home many many years ago!

I do know that they are high pressure sales,my advice is to wait them out, like a car dealer walk away, also they have model years .
my Friend wheeled and dealt and in Feb he got a tremendous discount on what they said was last years model.
act interested but keep talking about how you would feel better in a stick built home.....it is a buyers market and you can get great values, also the salesman are paid on a commission basis under great pressure from the manager.
all in all they build a great home, use quality products and you should be happy if you get a good price,I would recommend placing it on a foundation (which is the 12 k probably) which turns it into real estate but the 12 k is terribly high for a foundation with a 18 inch footer.
check for local masons and get a price then go in and deal with Clayton with this information.
the big thing is stall them and watch the price come down!

Do not buy a clayton home. They are misleading, poor quality the salespeople, managers and entire business practices are grossly misleading. We are going through a nigtmare. Research through rip off report, bbb, attorney general office
