I would advise you not to move here at all.

First off, it does suck here, I agree with above. But to answer your question, it is very variable. You could probably find a place in some parts of Newport News or Norfolk for under $1000, but you might get raped and/or mugged. You could look in Hampton, Va. Beach or Williamsburg, but you can expect to pay way too ****ing much. I pay $850/ month for a 2 bedroom apartment in williamsburg. If cost is an issue, it is pretty easy to find roommates, as it is way too expensive here.

Renting a condo here in the Western Branch area will cost you about 1200. It is a nice area here in Chesapeake don't let anyone scare you off. There is crime here like in any other city but Chesapeake seems to still be pretty clean.

Thanks Irisheyes,
I am going down today for the weekend to look around the areas you have listed, typically we want to keep rent below 1250 if possible, and again, we want an area that we can walk to shops and restraunts etc... and a safe area if possible as i will be travelling a lot and my wife will be at home. Can you advise of any good realtors or rentals?
Thanks for your help

I would advise against moving here as well, but it sounds like you don't have a choice so in answer to your question in Chesapeake if you want to rent a true "house" (not a townhouse or condo) I would say to find something in a safe area, you are probably looking at $1750-$2000+ per month. Townhomes are cheaper, maybe $1250-$1500 per month. Be very careful where you choose though, there will be some cheaper, but the areas are rough. As far as being able to walk to shops/restaurants, I don't think you will find that in Hampton Roads unless you live in like Virginia Beach Town Center and you would need to pay more in rent in that case.

I will send you a pM on the agent we used when we sold our home there but she is on the Hampton side of the river. If she can't help with the areas you narrow it down to, she may be able to recommend someone.

Here is an honest option that no one else will give you.
If you are relocation to this area, please keep one thing in mind.
It’s a beautiful town, but the people from here suck.
I also relocated here from Brooklyn and found this to be Hillbilly country.
They are all back stabbers and will rat you out in a minute.
They will not help you unless they get something in return.
They don't know what good food is.
They have no morals or self-respect.
They would rather buy a six-pack of Beer before they buy a gallon of Milk for their children.
They all drink beer the minute they get home and they think it's cool.
They have no loyalty to their employer and will leave the company for a 25-cent increase if offered by another company.
They are not friendly and will not go out of their way for anyone.
They can't drive to save their life.
To sum it up, Hamptonroads SUCKS

If you want to rent an actual house, not an apartment, condo or townhouse, the average cost in Virginia Beach is about $1400 from looking myself the past few months.
