Default Williamsburg people... where do you/your neighbors work?

I am thinking of moving to Williamsburg because I have always liked the area, but I am curious about who lives there. I looked at monster.com and almost all the jobs listed for "Williamsburg" were actually in Richmond or Newport News. Do most people who live in Williamsburg commute to one of these places? Do you have a lot of houses in your neighborhood that are empty because they are "second homes"? Are your neighbors mostly retirees who don't work? Thanks.

Well, we don't live there yet, but when we do, my husband and I will be high-tech telecommuters so we'll be working from home. But I am curious about the answer to your question. I haven't gotten the impression that houses are empty or just filled with retirees.

me and my wife have been here for 3 weeks so I can't answer your question like some other people on here. We live in an apartment so I don't know much about the residents in local neighborhoods but I do know that the quality of life here seems to be pretty good compared to everywhere else Ive seen in NC and VA and that most people do commute to either Newport News or Richmond, since Wmsbg is right in the middle between the bigger cities Richmond/Norfolk. I work at a local retail store in town so my commute is only 10 minutes. Can't say the same about most of the people I've talked to.

I work in the immediate Williamsburg VA area in real estate. My wife works at various locations as a personal trainer and coach. My neighbors work for the local schools both Williamsburg, York County, New Kent County. A few are military stationed at Ft Eustis, Ft Monroe, Langley AFB, Yorktown NWS, Yorktown Coast Guard Station. Some are State Dept assigned to Camp Perry, Others work as Attorneys in Wmbg and Newport News, quite a few work for or teach at W&M, work for Anheuser Busch both the brewery and Busch Gardens, Financial Planners in Wmbg, JCC County Employees, Smithfield Food Employees in Smithfield, Self Employed, Dominion Power in Surry, various defense contractors at Ft Eustis and in Newport News, Physicians/ Medical personnel working both here in Wmbg and a few in Newport News. Newport News Shipyard employs many. Siemens in Newport News ( now Continental) A few commute to Richmond and work for various firms there as well. A few Restaurant and small business owners
Then there are the retirees. Some now in consulting fields after they retired from their previous positions and moved here. There are a number of second homes here in Williamsburg. Every neighborhood is different . I see more lower priced condos bought for second home purchases but you also see million dollar plus homes used that way..
In a nutshell people here work everywhere.
Hope that helps.
