I am still researching preschools in the area for our three year olds. I have looked and read reviews (greatschools.net included) and I'm curious...the manor schools get really good reviews even though they are higher priced. What sets them apart from the rest? Are they really as good as I hear?

Other preschools recommendations welcome!
TIA
Alicia

I almost sent one of my kids to a Manor School but ended up not doing it when circumstances changed. However, I did look into the school in Chesapeake somewhat intensely, including a trial day. I think what sets the schools apart is academics. The schools assess each child when he/she begins and then builds from there on an individual basis. Some time is taken each day to work with each child individually on the tasks he/she is capable of handling. My impression is that a lot of kids learn to read early in particular because they are given the opportunity to learn reading when they are ready to read, rather than waiting until kindergarten.

I agree with the previous poster. My good friend sent her son to Greenbrier Manor for part of the day while he was ages 4 and 5. They really concentrated on attaining reading skills at a young age. They are heavily academic as opposed to child centered or play based, per my friend's thoughts and experiences of it. She said she liked the school overall, but that it was high strung and frustrating for her son at times because the curriculum was so academically driven at such a young age.

LOL, a pre-school as heavily academic. It is probably true, it just sounds kind of funny . When I was in pre-school our academic program consisted of making macaroni pictures and a kid was successful if he didn't eat the glue. I guess times have changed and they are starting them younger and younger these days.

HI!
I actually used to teach at the Manor schools about five years ago...I took some time off to have my babies! My daughter was able to attend Preschool this year and I had no hesitations about sending her there. Manor schools used individualized instruction for all their students. The majority of the time the children are playing and only a handful are working with teachers. The curriculum is very kid friendly with lots of crafts and projects to go along with the studies. The reading program was developed by the owner, as well as phonics and math workbooks. Lots of learning through play. You should go observe or at least go on a tour!!
I have enjoyed seeing my daughter go through this year and look forward to a few more! Good luck with your search.

My son went to Beach Manor for 3 yr. old and 4 yr. old pre-k. We absolutely loved it and were so sad to say good bye. I have not one negative thing to say about our experience. I have since referred friends who now send their kids there. You definitely have to check it out to see for yourself!
