The only thing I really notice is that there is very little differentiation between "i" and "e" as in "pin" and "pen"

I'll admit, I'm country. I think that is one thing that chases people away. lol I'm imposing and sound like a hillbilly, but the women love it. >

The only thing that bothers me is when someone says I'm from NC and I'm like, "Nooooo... West Virginia." They give me this look like they are trying to figure out what planet I'm talking about. I kind of understand thought, because alot of hilly people stay in the hills. I've never known anyone to leave WV and not move somewhere that is in the mountains.

Does anyone know of available recordings of Hampton Roads accents? Or commercially available recordings of someone with a Virginia Beach accent

From my experiences..many people in the tidewater area either have southern lite accents, or flat accents. Thats mainly because the area is a military area. One of my frends is from Surry county and has a strong southern drawl so they exist, and some younger AA youth have accents in Portsmouth, Norfolk, and parts of Hampton. This one girl at my job from Hampton has one of the countriest accents I've ever heard.lol.

Off topic but I called southside va community college (located in Brunswick country va) to get some of my records transferred from high school today and I noticed that everyone on the phone's accents (3 diff people) were much more thick than people in Tidewater, and sounded like they could

There is a such thing as a "Tidewater Accent." Tidewater accent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's very similar to a Baltimore accent. We're from MD and my husband was born and raised in "Bawl-mer" so we noticed a few Hampton Roads natives sounding like they were from B-more. I just had to Google and discovered that there is a native accent here.

I agree with you. I know some older people from Baltimore who sound very very similar to the older people from Tidewater. Some of the younger people sound similar to Baltimore folk also.

Coming from CO, I have noticed the accents. But I think its a hoot because so many ask me where I am from because I have the accent...so its all good!

You mean the "Nuper News" accent?

You may be on to something though... I've never heard a distinguishable accent in NN (except for my example), but that's probably because I grew up there.
