Default Collecting info about Newport News Neighborhoods

Hi, my wife and I will be relocating to Newport News in the end of May. My work is sending me out there. I've never been to the area and in a couple of weeks, we're going on a scouting trip to find a place to live. I'm hoping you guys can give us some help. We're looking for a 2 BR.

I have been doing all the research I can on apartmentratings.com and all the different apartment rental sites. I've used Google Earth to zoom in to street level and looked at the streets and how well kept some of these places appear to be. Nothing I do, however, really tells me how good the neighborhoods are, and what neighborhoods to stay away from. What should I be looking at? Can you guys give me, for example, an intersection to start at and work my way out from? How about an apartment/townhouse name to check out?

Also, I will be working in Smithfield. How long is the commute from Smithfield to the Newport News side of the JR Bridge?

Oh Yeah, can anyone recommend a major bank? I found out that Chase is not in VA.

How about a major supermarket? In Chicago, there are Dominick's and Jewel. What do they have in VA? Are there any super-Wal-Mart’s or super K-Marts or some other superstore places?

Any other information you could give me would be fantastic. Thanks.

what apartment complexes are you looking at? that would help with the neighborhood info. the commute from nn to smithfield is not too bad, you may have the occasional bridge lift, but it is tolerable

Well, I really haven't commited to any particular neighborhood, because I don't have enough info. My wife may be able to transfer to the Lowes in Newport News, so I guess it would be somewhere close to that store, or close to a bus that will get her there. She does not drive.

Why dont you just live in Smithfield? If your talking about the Lowes in Denbigh (which I think is the only Lowes in Newport News), then check out the Kiln Creek area..it's very close to that Lowes, there arent that many neighboorhoods right in that area because there is a big interstate overpass right beside it and the Jefferson Commons area right beside that which is a new big strip mall with restaurants in that area..Also that Lowes is about a 2 minute drive from Walmart..I dont know what a "super"-Walmart is but its pretty big, and usually has everything you need..

Just do not look into anything south of Mercury Boulevard or Anything around Denbigh and Warwick and you will be okay.

There are super walmarts everywhere. I honestly haven't seen a single "regular" walmart here. Walmart is where my husband and i mostly do our shopping just because we can get everything there. We also go to sams club as well.

Consider the Oyster Point area. You didn't mention a monthly rental rate. ? They are pricey.
An address in Oyster point would be :675 Town Center Drive
Newport News, VA 23606
Bank: Suntrust
Grocery Stores : Farm Fresh, Trader Joes, Harris Teeter Food Lion Fresh Market is opening in the future. Wal Mart, Sam's Club, Costco.
From my office in Oyster Point to Smithfield is about 30 minutes.

There are other posters who will have more info about apartments. Do give a desired rental rate though.

Thanks, everyone. I'm looking at staying between $800 - $950 for monthly rent.

I can't live in Smithfield, because my wife does not drive. She needs to be able to get to work by bus. Since there is no Lowes in the Smithfield area, we will have to stay close to the ones in Newport News or Hampton. I have gotten the idea, just by looking at the rental sites that it's probably better to live in Newport News than Hampton, but I could be totally wrong.

You definitely want to stay in the Oyster Point area - that is where all the shopping is. The intersection is Jefferson and Oyster Point.

The Super Walmart in Poquoson is much nicer than the one on Jefferson.

Definitely look at Oyster Point area. Your wife could catch the bus from their to Lowes. Look at Forest Lakes, Impression, Harbors, Park Place- all in oyster point area. and stacy is right, walmart off 17 in tabb is nicer than the one in NN, and actually a little closer if you live in oyster point
