So, you are in favor of creating another Virginia Beach on the other side of the water? McMansions for as long as the eye can see, and their symbiotic other half, shopping centers?
I think part of what makes Newport News some what attractive is the fact that is HAS trees, open areas and parks.

So you can create another downtown Norfolk. Toss in a couple clubs, and you can get the brawls, shootings, drugs and crime that come pooring out of the clubs in downtown Norfolk. City Center does not need a club.

No, not really, Newport News just needs to attract more of a corporate base, and everything will fix itself. Crime is dropping in the city, and it seems like they are doing more to reach out to business then any city on the southside is.

Downtown is a real dump the parking situation is horrible and the area is at best scary at night nobody goes down there unless they work the shipyard or you have to pay a ticket.
NN doesn't need to push the blue collar workers out of the city they need to bring in more upper middle class blue collar work instead of the garbage the city has now for employment opportunities most people who live in NN can't afford to live in a decent neighborhood unless they're being supported by the military due to shamefully low wages.
There's alot of work to do here and the slight of hand that the city is trying to pull off by diverting attention towards the city center and trying to hide the pitiful state of downtown and denbigh areas is not helping the people of newport news.

See no need to argue with people from other cities, this man from Newport news understands 100% where im coming from. If you lived here you probably would as well.

Let's remember that most of the shootings that I know of at Waterside involve people FROM Newport News.

You dont know that, can you cite or document proof of that... I would think that they are from the ring of projects circling the east side of DT Norfolk, or from Portsmouth. Typical comment from a southsider trying to belittle NN at there own expense

Regardless of where they are from, that matters not. My point was that the "activities" of downtown Norfolk, namely the clubs and bars, are attracting drugs and violence in to the downtown area (many of the murders and assaults in the area occur outside clubs or bars). Yes, there are questionable high crime areas right outside the area which could account for some random crimes, but in general, its the atmosphere attracting rowdy crowds towards it.
Another poster suggested that Newport News city center should get some of these places. That is a terrible idea.

Most of Granby street and other areas of DT are fine, it is just waterside that has become seedy. When you mix bars and clubs in an enclosed facility, drunken, questionable clientle, off course crime is going to happen. From what I have read, Norfolk is going to be changing Waterside hopefully for the better

I agree, CC does not need clubs. Redstar, Firkin, and the bar at the Marriott is just fine

I'll say it again, the area will remain irrelevant then. Who goes there? The place is a waste. There going to have to add things that attract the average NN citizen, and that might involve bringing in a crowd that you dont necessarily want over there, but thats just apart of making steps toward some type of downtown. You have to remember this is Newprot News, the majority of people here are not wealthy, actually most low -middle income folk, so you have to bring things that attract them. Something for everyone, now that makes a great "downtown" or "lifestyle center" (God, I hate that term)...

People need to start thinking a little more regionally than just NN. Sure, the averge income of NN is lower than the rest of the Peninsula, but when you factor in YC, POQ, JCC, IW- than the numbers change dramatically. Besides City Center is closer to Tabb and Poq, than it is to the East End. And there are plenty of things to do in CC for "low-middle" income people. They can grab a bite to eat at one of the cheaper food joints, have coffee and ice cream, stroll around the lake and people watch, attend a free concert there. I mean, geez, you almost have to spoon food people on this forum.
