Default Asked to transfer from Denver to Hampton. Please help with some questions..

I live in Denver and was asked to transfer to Hampton VA.
I am single, late 30s, male, and straight.

Is the cost of housing more or less than the Denver Suburbs?
What area near Hampton is new & low crime let still close to the Dating Pool?
What should a newcomer know about Hampton before making a decision?
(The good and the bad)

I have lived in Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, St. Louis, Boston, and New York
so any comparisons with these cities in mind regarding weather, mosquitoes,
crime, cost of living, etc would be great.

Also with the base and all is the single female population 50/50 to men or
does this area have a higher of men to women? IE: would a single man
find himself frustrated with the Dating Scene due to bad ratio of Men to
Women?

How much are Denver suburbs? Hampton Roads was very bubbly with the housing mania and prices in cities like Virginia Beach went up over 100% in 5 short years, while salaries (adj for inflation) slid backwards. Rents went up, but not as much -- it's pretty obvious by the rents how overpriced the for-sale housing is.

There are girls, but your gonna have to compete with the Navy dudes. Also, when the Navy dudes go out to sea some of their wives put the ring in storage. No expert here, but I ain't found anything.

Thanks for the reply... So when you say: "No expert here, but I ain't found anything"

Are you saying that women are in short supply and that you have had your eye out for a good
woman but haven't had good luck in the area? I'm not at all trying to infer anything, I just
want to make sure I read between the lines correctly. It sounds like single women are harder
to find in the area. And maybe it's not a great area for men to date women?

PS: Denver has a nickname of Menver because every bar is about a 10 to 1 men/woman ratio.
I don't want to subject myself to another area like this again..

If you live on the Peninsula (Hampton side), check out Downtown Hampton or Oyster Point area in NN (City Center of PW). More single people in these areas and decent M/F ratio. I feel as if on the southside (Norfolk, VB) you compete more the navy guys

I actually took a little ride with some friends to the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach last night. It's got lots of bars and clubs and is always the place I hear about where people go to "hook up". As a local, I try to avoid the Oceanfront at all costs since I'm a guy and hate being "sized up" by macho-wannabe dudes trying to act tough (Va Beach used to be so laid back, I really don't know what happened), and last night reaffirmed my stance of avoidance. Last night was all thugs (whether real or fake, I don't know), Navy dudes, Jersey-shore types (aka "Guidos"), and drunk guys on beach cruisers. The girls I saw were mostly in packs and didn't seem too interested in the guys hitting on them. Not that Hampton is very close to the Oceanfront, but my point is I haven't seen much in the way of a dating scene around here, and my guess is that most of the people down there weren't from Virginia Beach in the first place.

If every person moving to the penisula that was told to look into City Center/Port Warwick in Newport News really took that advice, that area would be as crowded as manhattan lol..you guys are funny, their are other nice areas outside of there. Check out the new Stony Run condos off of Denbigh & Jefferson AVE in NN, very nice.

None of those cities you listed have similar weather to here, prepare for hot/humid summers. Mild winters (if your from Denver its mild, but if your from LA not so much). Seeing as your use to living in big-lively cites prepare for a dissapointment in night life. The Cost of living is bad here, seeing as the average salary in the area doesnt meet the requirement to live comfortably. But there are much worse places, and I actually am satisfied with the cost of living, not one of my complaints.

and there is a new apartment complex in Oyster Point that my cousin just moved into, he says there are SOOO many women out there. It's a very nice place, I will try to find the name of it.

Stony Run is nice as well, I just figured if you is looking for easy access to hook up and have his place within walking place then CC/PW is the key; but I agree Stony run is nice.

FYI, that new wine bar in PW is crawling with cougars...

Well i lived in southeastern mass (about an hour away from Boston) There are definitely a lot of mosquitoes when the warm weather comes and it is definitely more humid here then in mass. Weather wise it kind of reminds me of mass except the summers are hotter and more humid and the winters are milder. I live in Norfolk and when it did "snow" here it hit the ground and pretty much melted. lol. Cost of living is hard to say because i paid cheap rent in ma but i also didnt live in a city the size of Boston. Crime wise there seems to be a lot of crime here in norfolk but again i havent ever lived in a city this big before so that could be why it seems like a lot of crim happens here. if you love the ocean then you will like this area though. I love going to va beach because i love the ocean and the beach. Its actually sand and doesnt have mostly all rocks in it like where i moved from :-p.

Trust me on this one, you don't want to move to Hampton or anywhere in HR for that matter. The ratios are horrible here, someone told me once that HR has the worst ratios of any big city in the country and I can believe it. This area is C-R-A-W-L-I-N-G with military guys and the very few women that are here are usually married or in a relationship. The bars/clubs are pretty depressing and in the rare cases there are single women, they are usually cold and standoffish. I have lived in many places and travelled a great deal and it is not like that in other cities so I have a basis for comparison. I am married so the single scene is not an issue, but if I were single I would get out of this area in a heartbeat.

As far as cost of living, Denver has been historically somewhat high and HR used to be cheap, but as Telemonster said in the past 5 years, prices have gone up about 100%. When salaries are factored in, this is one of the most expensive areas in the country to live. I would say now HR is more expensive then Denver.

The other cities you have lived in have their positives and negatives and whether they are better places to live than HR is debatable. But HR definitely doesn't have what those cities have, no pro sports teams, no true downtown, no big name entertainment, no corporate base, etc. This area is all about the military and that is about it.

Is your company forcing you to move here or do you have an option? If you have the option I would recommend not moving here, if you are being forced then that is a different story. If you have a great job that you like then that makes it a tougher decision, but come here for a visit and check out the bars/clubs and you will see what I mean about the ratios. Will also let you see Hampton first hand and get a feel for what it is truly like.

If you have any other questions, let us know.

I think that out of all of HR, Hampton probably is the best up and coming area for singles. There are plenty of places to meet women - not just bars, and really that is probably not the best place anyway. I am married, but it doesn't mean I am blind .

I like this area, and coming from Northern VA/DC area it really is less expensive (from housing to food and services like car repairs etc). Natives of this area always say it is too expensive, but in reality it is middle of the road. Not too high and not too low.

The weather is a bonus here. 4 seasons - hot in the summer, but milder winters with very little snow. There is also plenty to do - history, outdoor activities, cultural activities (although not as many as the big city), festivals - you name it.
