I live in the Beechmont area of Denbigh in Newport News and I like it a lot. Affordable, single family homes with decent neighbors, lots of kids, have NEVER had any crime issues. Really close to Colony Pines without the high home prices-hee hee! I work in Hampton and I make it to work in about 15 minutes every morning on the interstate.

Hi everyone! So, my husband was in NN this past week and really liked it--he said it was really green and that there seemed like there was a lot to do--museums, parks, etc. He visited an area farther abroad called Poquoson and said it was also really pretty and maybe had a little bit more of a "beachy" feel to it. He thinks it was probably a little bit out of our reach financially, but was curious as to what the commute would be like. Anybody have any idea what the commute time from Poquoson (I hope I'm spelling this right) to the Oyster Point/Deer Park area of Newport News might be?

Poquoson to Oyster Point is a straightshot down Victory/Oyster Point road, 15 minutes or so. The only thing about Poquoson, besides being expensive, is that it is mostly at sea level, and can flood extensively, especially with tropical storms and hurricanes.
I think that you all will like Newport News and the Peninsula area (Hampton, York county, Poq, Williamsburg) in general. Definitely alot to do for families

Thanks Damian! I agree that Newport News seems like a really good area--my husband really liked it and had only good things to say. We've lived in quite a few places in the last few years as my husband finished up his degree and got some job experience under his belt, and we're just looking for someplace we can settle and stay put for a few years (LA was definitely not the area to raise kids--so smoggy and polluted, Chapel Hill was really nice, but too hard to find a job). From everything we've seen so far, I really think Newport News is the place!

The Daily Press ( Local Newpaper) has a crime database map where you can input an address and see any crimes reported with a radius. Try it here
It can also be used for Chesapeake, Norfolk and James City County

For the most part, not a great part of the city. Too close to the East End

I guess the fine residents stayed home this weekend, versus coming to Norfolk:

No, its just that Norfolk has its own thugs to worry about... Please cite when any of the 20 some murders in Norfolk so far this year were committed by someone in NN
