Default Advice for a weekend in VA Beach

Hi,

I'm looking into heading to Virginia Beach for Memorial Day weekend with some friends. We're trying to decide whether or not it's worth it to pay the higher hotel rates to stay right on the beach, or if it would be better to pay half as much and drive 20 minutes to the beach.

How's the traffic going towards the beach on the weekends? Would we be able to find parking if we stayed at a hotel away from the beach?

Thanks!

They have municipal parking at the beach, but you will have to pay to park. It depends on what you want to do while you are here. If it's for beach purposes and the nite life, stay at the beach, especially if you plan to drink. Our DUI laws are pretty strict.

I second Erma's response. If you are planning on doing any drinking at all, it is completely worth staying right at the beach. You can stroll from restaurant to restaurant, bar to bar, take the trolley up and down Atlantic Ave., then go right back to your hotel room. There are also many breakfast places right at the beach.
I definitely would not chance staying 20 minutes' drive away if there's going to be alcohol involved.

You couldn't pay me to go down there Memorial day. It will be a traffic nightmare. Stay at the beach.

Yes, definitely the beach. I live down here and had my girlfriend brother down a few days from Michigan and stayed in a hotel at the beach with him and had a blast.
