Regarding engineering, though. . . Maybe I was lucky, but wireless communications EASILY paid $50k-$70k 8 years ago when I left the profession with little experience (~ 3 yrs), so probably $65k-85k in today's dollars. I went with the flow and followed business to Raleigh and Chicago for more $. Left b/c of health issues with my wife. I knew accounting was different, but I didn't think that it was that much less.

I guess it depends on how you are defining an engineer.
It seems you are defining it more as someone who designs, installs and builds tech related systems, such as wireless, computer, network, etc. I cant really speak for that, I dont know anyone personally in that field, so I take your word on that.
My sister is in a field which designs bridges, canals, waterways, grading for construction, etc. She has been beating feet for the past six months, and so far managed two interviews, and one of the interviewers is actually looking for jobs for her at other engineering firms. How much of that is the economy? I dont know, however, there doesnt appear to be any demand for this type of Engineer in Hampton Roads right now.

Aren't they selling off our infrastructure to foreigners? (Tunnel)
Also, the company I worked for. I'm pretty sure the snotty woman who did all the accounting had her CPA thing. Porsche, two houses, boat. She won't hurting.

1. She was likely an officer. Officers usually have CPA's, and they can make 80k+, but the position usually requires 10-15 years exp here. I dont plan on sticking around long enough making dirt to get to that.
2. Her husband could have been making significant money
3. She could be up to her eyes in debt
4. She could have been making a better wage then the market suggests. This could be because she was lured away from an out of state company where she was making considerably more, or she has ins with a higher up in the company.

I was tech (degree in electrical and computer engineering). Pay was great. Don't know abt civil (your sister). Army Corps of Engineers always seems to be advertising, but I don't have any real contacts.

No husband, would be a high maintenance girl. She previously worked for local gov't as I recall.
Start your own accounting / bookeeping / tax jank.
The commercial tax places make TONS on the less intelligent people that come in at the last minute and want the super fast refund thing (I'm told). They didn't earn the money so they are careless with it.

Starting a tax company might be lucrative eventually, especially since in Virginia, tax preparers are not required to be certified, nor are they legally responsible for mistakes, but I dont have the savings to sit on until I could build a clientele.

That's not a go-go attitude! Find some empty office, pick the locks and change them, put up a little home-made signage, and work there in the evenings! Get a $3/mo domain name, and tell your clients to check there for the latest location.
