Default Looking for a good apartment in NN area

I may be getting a job around the start of next year at the newport news shipyard. So right now im looking to rent an apt. and was wondering if any of you all had any recomendations. I would prefer to stay within a short distance from work if all is possible (within NN or hampton). I have looked at some apt. online such as the chapman and park place. I was not too sure what areas are the best. School zones arent important (as i dont have kids) and it will probably will be a one bed/ one bathroom apt. Any input is thankful

Anything too close to the shipyard is going to be in a bad area. Just as a general rule.

I would suggest looking at apts that say 'Oyster Point area' in Newport News. Anything on Oyster Point Rd or Jefferson in that area is good. Lots of shopping - mall, grocery etc. I would also try to stick to Newport News, just because it is closer and Hampton could add an extra 15 min to your travel time (depending on the time of day). Unfortunately, the area real close to the shipyard is not the greatest (and on the other side of 664, downright bad).

I would definitely check out rental homes too. There are many for rent in the area and can be cheaper than an apt in some cases. There are some cute smaller houses off Warwick that might give you a little more room and privacy than an apt.

Check out the Arboretum on Oyster Point Rd. (they are really nice, lots of new buildings and fairly inexpensive rent) and also Featherstone in Kiln Creek (surprisingly not very expensive for Kiln Creek and very safe, clean, great neighborhood). Those two are my top picks for Newport News for quality and price. Both very affordable and VERY nice!

Yes I will agree that the Jefferson/Oyster point area is a good area to live, close to the mall and other shops.

I will also agree that anything to close to the shipyard will be unsafe, especially if you got a family and kids.

I was active duty right by the shipyard at the USMC Reserve center off of warwick. The area close to terminal blvd is just in poverty, I never knew we had places that bad here in hampton roads. I went there for a Field day with Marines and NN Police department to get involved with the community and some of the kids looked like they were from those "5 cents a day" could feed this kid for a week commercial (running around with no clothes or ripped clothes, no shoes, etc). It was crazy and I've been to 3 third world countries.

So stay away form downtown Newport News. If you want, I believe they are building new appartments near the hampton colosium area off of mercury blvd.

I'm with the others in saying stay away from the shipyard. I drove down Jefferson Ave below Mercury Blvd today. Its just bad.

Personally my votes are for Oyster Point or North Hampton (anywhere along Rt. 134).
