Thanks Shelly for the response!

Where are there $250k decent homes?

I was just there and looking in Chesapeake (Hickory School District) and Va Beach.

I would not even consider Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, or Hampton. School districts and/or crime stats rule those cities out for me.

The only decent neighborhoods that I saw had homes in the $350k + range. I'm talking about a neighborhood where you don't have lock your car in your own driveway (although I always do), kids play outside with other kids before and after suppertime, no gang graffiti is noted, neighbors get together and talk about issues in their neighborhood and watch out for their neighborhood because they have a vested investment in their neighborhood.

Speaking of neighborhoods, what happened over in Orchid Glen and West of Princess Anne, near Independence...it looks like the hood now! I feel bad for anyone who got stuck buying a $250K home in that neighborhood...cuz that is only going downhill from what I see.

I hear "Green Run" is now known as "Gang Run"...I didn't make it over there...I will next time to check it out.

Try the southeast area of Va. Beach. Redwing, Strawbridge, Redmill, Ocean Lakes sometimes Castleton.. and you will find some highly sought after and rated schools.

I just did a quick search and found a nice 3 bedroom 2 bath ranch in Strawbridge for under 250k. If you look up the schools you will find Strawbridge Elem, Princess Anne Elem, and Kempsville High. Also check out Landstown area.

It takes patience : ) and looking hard, but they are there.

What street/address was that 3BR in Strawbridge?

I'm looking for a 4BR/2BA in those areas...but the only things under $325k are on a busy street, have a busy street in the backyard, or have no backyard...or are located in school districts where I don't want to send me children.

I have a Realtor currently...and even she is having trouble finding just the right home...I'm sure it will come...but greedy home sellers need to realize they did not just strike the lottery and they have more room to come down...the majority of the folks moving there (military) cannot afford the homes there right now unless they settle for living in some drug infested neighborhood in Portsmouth or Norfolk.

I even asked some home sellers if they could afford to buy their own homes...some admitted it would be tough!

JLROhio I just sent you an email. I don't think it would be right for me to just start listing addresses on this forum. Some owners don't like it : )

thanks, shelly

Sorry I keep asking questions that are getting you to break forum rules. I'll contact you offline.

Are they any military members who are transferring in with thoughts on where they might reside?

Military BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing - 80% of military members in Hampton Roads receive BAH of $1,500 or under per month) doesn't even begin to cover buying a home in Virginia Beach in the decent areas.

I guess it's back to living in a Townhome or renting (even that will be tough finding something decent). I guess it could be worse...we could get transferred to D.C.!!!
