Moving to Langley - Help on Houses please
My husband has been stationed at Langley and we will be moving this fall. We are looking for houses in the area and noticed that a lot of people have told others to stay away from the southern area. We have noticed a large number of houses for sale around the area of 16th - 30th streets in Newport News. What is the reason everyone says to avoid that area? I will be working from home so we have to find a house I will be comfy staying in all the time. Can someone give me some specifics about the area that makes it so bad? Thanks bunches!!!

Because it is full of run down houses, drugs and gangs. Fox hill (Hampton), Dembigh (Newport News) and York county are nice.

It is in the highest crime area on the peninsula and possibly the whole Hampton Roads area. It is where the city's housing projects are located. Even if it was safe would you want to live right next to a heavily industrial area with bad smells?
A couple of rules of thumb on the Peninsula.
- Anything South of Mercury Blvd in Hampton or Newport News is best left avoided with the only possible exceptions being Downtown Hampton or Wythe.
- The further North of Mercury Blvd you are, the safer with possible exceptions being the part of Denbigh near Warwick Blvd and Dresden Dr.

You might look in the Yorktown neighborhoods of Yorkshire Downs, Coventry, Meadowlake Farms, Tabb Lakes, Woodlake. All are off of Hampton Highway/Magruder blvd. All are in the area of the Langley housing area called Bethel Manor which is off base.
Schools are York County School division. Most are Tabb schools, Coventry or Grafton.
Zipcode 23693

Thank you all for your help. We live 10 miles from East St Louis so what some consider a "bad" area we may consider normal. So I thought I'd better ask.

I would guess you are at Scott AFB now? I've heard about parts of STL and East STL from other AF folks. Too bad East STL seems to be taking Belleville with it. But relax that 16th to 30th streets area of NN will be as close as you get to East STL around here and that aint that close.
It's Cin makes a great recommendation of York County. But finding something affordable will be a challenge. I got depressed looking at the prices of homes in Yorktown for sale today.

Hello and welcome to Langley.
Did you receive a Langley AFB welcome package? Been a good while since I retired, but the pack should have some very good info for new comers. Langley has (or did have) an outstanding Family Services program. When you guys arrive on station I suggest Family Services to be one of your priorities. There you'll find a listing of homes for sale/rent. Don't forget to drop by http://www.langley.af.mil/ for additional base and local community info.
I live in Poquoson. It's a wonderful, friendly quiet community. My wife and I have raised two children here since '92. You'll find that many military and Nasa families have moved here. The schools are highly rated in the Common Wealth.
Poquoson is also very close to Langley-Nasa and Langley AFB. Shopping centers and the Newport News/ Williamsburg Airport are also nearby.
You all take care and I hope this was helpful,
JimB
