Furniture & mattress store recommendations
Hi all.
My husband and I are moving to Chesapeake from NY next month. We'll be furnishing most rooms in our house. Do you have recommendations for furniture stores and mattress stores in the Hampton Roads area? It would be great to find deals in outlets, but I'll take any and all recommendations. In terms of the furniture style, we like more contemporary but classic (like Pottery Barn, but don't want to pay their prices).
Relatedly, we tossed around the idea of going to NC to the furniture stores there. Anyone have experience with this and have suggestions of which stores?
Thanks so much for any help you could provide!
Cathy

The largest furniture dealer in Hampton Roads by volume is Haynes on Virginia Beach Blvd near the Witchduck exit. They have 'Lowest Prices of the Year' sales almost every weekend and a huge building. If you read a local paper or watch tv you'll definitely see their ads and it's probably worth a look. They carry a pretty wide range of options.
Near that location within a quarter mile there's also a La-Z-Boy, Roomstore, Grand Furniture, and Mattress Discounters. Closer to town center are the more upscale furniture places--Ethan Allen, Willis Furniture, and Thomasville.
If you like the idea of outlets, definitely check out Haynes along with 'The Dump' on Military Hwy. I've never been, but the Dump claims to be sort of like a TJ Maxx of furniture, and offer lower prices by getting overstocked furniture, furniture from stores that go bankrupt, etc. If they don't provide you with the quality or style you're hoping for, you'll be very near the other places.
As for going to NC, I really don't think you'll find any better prices or selection there anymore. The NC furniture business pretty much went out of business years ago. To be totally honest, they'll probably carry the same stuff that's been shipped in from Asia. Some of the upper end stores like Ethan Allen do carry largely American-made furniture, 65% according to their website which I just checked, but it definitely comes at a higher price.

The Dump is also Haynes. Stuff they can't sell in their VaBeach store. It's junk really. Haverty's is high end furniture, well made, but up there in price.

I agree with Erma about Value City... we looked at all the others.....
Ohh and once you get here... HAYNES commercials will drive you crazy! They are always having a last time rock bottom sale.. BUT it is much like the jet noise.. after awhile you just dont hear them anymore hahahahah!

I am moving down on sunday and am in need of a couch. I just need something to get me by until the checks start coming in. I am leaving my family in NH and coming down just to work. All I have is a bed and recliner to sit on. Any cheap or free couches around? I will be living in northern Newport News. Thanks.

I second the orginal mattress factory, we bought two sets from them and they are great.
I went to Haynes once and talked them down on a LR set from $3500 to $1100 and walked out. It must have been garbage. I did buy a LR set from The Room Store, not the greatest prices, but good quality stuff, my ex-wife still has it.
I have also bought stuff from Value City, it's all Chinese, but you can find some decent stuff at decent prices.
