Default Proposed Coal-Burning Plant in Surry

Hi Guys--

I read this morning in the paper (it was Sunday's paper--I'm a little behind!) that there is a proposal to build a really huge coal-burning plant in Surry and that this could have a major impact on the air and water of the whole peninsula region (where all the emissions from the plant--including high levels of mercury, will blow).

I realize I'm a newcomer, and that I have little right to start shaking things up, but this really concerns me. I read a study recently that said autism rates (not to mention asthma rates!) skyrocket the closer a child lives to any sort of power plant--and this one would be huge! (and right next to the double reactor nuclear power plant already in Surry.

If anyone else would like to try and stop this, here is a link to the Sierra Club's website. It offers letters and links that can be sent to various offices to voice your objections

We all want electric, but no one wants a power plant. I say go for it.

You're right, everybody likes electricity--including me! What this is really about is finding a better solution than building another giant coal burning plant where it's not needed. There's already a nuclear facility right in Surry that could be expanded to create more power. Despite what the industry says, coal is far from a "clean" energy source--a coal burning plant actually emits more radiation than a nuclear one because of all the uranium it spews into the air (not to mention mercury and various other heavy metals).

Everybody needs (and wants!) electricity. What this area doesn't need (because there are better options) is a coal burning plant to produce it.

Thanks for joining the debate, Spazkat. Happy to have heard from you!

Okay, for anyone who might want more information on this subject, here are two Daily Press articles coming out against the Surry plant:

Surry coal plant: Just say no - dailypress.com

No to coal in Surry - dailypress.com

Also, a press release for Wise Energy For Virginia:

CBF: SURRY POWER PLANT WILL HARM JAMES RIVER, CHESAPEAKE BAY

And more links with actions we can take to stop the plant from moving forward:

Action Center

Hope these help. I'll shut up now.
