Thank you for responding with recommendations! I now have a greater idea of where to focus my efforts when we arrive later this month.

I have a son that goes to Ocean Lakes High and a daughter that goes to Corporate Landing Middle.... We moved here because of the schools for this address... our elementary would be Strawbridge which also came highly rec'd......
Make sure when you find a place you type it into the VA beach website and get the correct schools.. when we were looking around a few had the wrong schools attached to the postings....Our agent and I both picked up on it before viewing....
Try calling a few of the elementary schools that were recommended and ask them about the programs you are looking for your child...
Good luck with your search and an early welcome to you!!
I happen to LOVE it here... we are in the Strawbridge/Red Mill area....

Depends what kinda vibe you want in a place to live. Every neighborhood has a different crowd and feel to it. My personal favorite is Chic's Beach. The North End, Great Neck, Strawbridge, and some parts of Atlantic Ave a few blocks back from the tourist bull**** are also pretty nice. I'm just a beach bum so I could be biased

I'm in the King's Grant area and it's a great area! Safe, fairly quiet, and close to everything.
I would avoid King's Grant Elementary...they were on the chopping block for closure last year but got a reprieve. I work for VBCPS and have heard wind there will be another round next year so avoid the ones that were looked at this year.
I would recommend Kingston, Malibu, Thalia. If you are looking for rents in the $1200-$1600 price range, forget Kingston. You will find houses in Malibu, possibly King's Forest, Thalia, and Birchwood. From Little Neck Road area to Lake Wright...20 minutes tops and not on the highway.
Kempsville is also decent but I don't know the rents over there and the commute could be easy, depends on which way you would go. I lived in Bayside area 11 years ago; don't go there. These are my 2 cents. Best wishes!

Hello,
First of all, I am in love with the Virginia Beach Area. I have been trying to relocate there for the past 12 years but circumstances just kept holding me in Brooklyn, New York. I fear that if I do not make a move now, I may never do so and end up growing my children in a tiny 2 bdroom apartment until they are of age and move out because of the tight space. Me on my husband have saved and saved, but really cannot buy a home in New York. It is just too expensive and you get too little for your money. I want to give my children a home in which to play in the backyard, grow and expand their horizons in a decent neighborhood with good schools. I love NY, but this is not where I wish to grow my children. I am not too concern about the night life, but being near a military base would be a plus since my husband is a reservist currently on active duty. I know Fort Story but do not know the names of the neighborhoods near that base. Can anyone help me with the names of neighborhood around Ft. Story?
Your response is much appreciated. I plan to move at the end of August so as the get the children (6, 8 12 ) enrolled in school. My husband FT job will be with the US Post Office.
Thank you in advance

Ft Story is at the far North East end of Va Bch where the bay meets the ocean, the area around Ft Story attends Cox high school. Some of the neighborhoods are Bay Island, Shore Haven, Forrest Hills, Broad Bay Greens etc....This area is known to have the most expensive zip code in the city with some homes running well into the seven figure range, so if you plan to live there bring lots and lots of money with you from NY

Well, I went to Landstown High School few years ago an it was horrible. A lot of gangs, some students may say not, but if you know a lot of people in the school, you know a lot that is going on. Also, drug activity does go on in the school, I remember Jessey Jackson visited Landstown one day an everybody was chilling in the halls, an the dealers would be screaming re-up, an trust me, I saw them get re-up (means out of drugs of drugs to sell an need more, for you older folks haha). Only thing I loved about Landstown was how muli-cultural it was. The school was mostly black, an also a lot of asians, so you're able to get to know an be friends with all types of people. Other than that, I'm glad be out of high school.
A lot of people say Cox, Kellam, and Ocean Lakes are the best schools. But overall, I found them to be mostly white rich, snobby kids who attend them schools, more Cox and Kellam. Bayside I heard from a lot of people isn’t that bad of school zone.
Oh, also look at the noise zone chart (not very accurate). But them stupid jets be flying over all the time, making it hard to be outside an have quite time, an will shake an rattle your walls an windows at all hours.

We will be moving from College Station, Texas in the late fall. We are planning to rent, maybe apartment, in the Virginia Beach area. I am looking for good schools and a neighborhood that offers walking, bike riding, relaxed atmosphere. We are figuring between 1600 and 1800 a month, unless living on base is a better option? Any suggestions or ideas would be great!

You don't want to live on base, you will never see so many rednecks at once. I used to hang out around Twin Canal apartments, not that bad, its very close an people sit outside a lot an talk, unlike a lot of other stuffy ones I've been too.It also sits on a bike path, an grocery stores an restaurants are across the street so you can save gas money haha. Also, Shoreline Apartments is nice. It's right near Mt trashmore, be at oceanfront in 10-15 minutes, or be in downtown Norfolk an see baseball games at the Tides stadium in about 15 minutes.
