Family-Friendly Neighborhoods in Newport News
Well, after being here for almost 3 months and looking for houses EVERYWHERE on the peninsula (and some off!), we are starting to come to the same conclusion you all told us 3 months ago: That the Menchville/CNU/Riverside areas of Newport News are good, affordable, safe places for a family to live. I guess that, just like with a little kid, some lessons you just have to let 'em learn in their own
Anyway, right now, we are looking mostly at the Hidenwood and Hilton Village neighborhoods. Just to check one last time--are there any things we need to know about these areas? The neighborhoods seem really safe and nice--as nice as York County and many other pricier areas we have looked.
If there's anything we're missing and really need to know, talk us down now--because we are about to jump!

artistatheart, I was curious why you chose Newport News as opposed to the other HR towns. Are you or your spouse working in that area?

There is nothing wrong with Newport News. NN has plenty of beautiful clcean safe neighborhoods. I'd live there.

Hi Nittany2000--
My husband works near Oyster Point in midtown Newport News and, to be honest, after exploring other areas of the peninsula (York County, Poquoson, Williamsburg), we are coming to the conclusion that they aren't worth the extra money and commute time. We used to live in California and one of the reasons we left was because of the traffic and long commutes (anybody who complains about the traffic in NN has most certainly never been to LA). Our realtor told us that there are areas just as nice right within NN and we didn't believe her. Finally, after being discouraged by the high costs of the outlying areas, we took a drive through some of the neighborhoods in NN--they're beautiful and just what we're looking for--kids playing in their yards, riding their bikes--even a lemonade stand! And all within a ten minute drive to my husband's office. We're sick of putting all our money into our house and that is the situation we're looking at if we buy in YC, W'burg, etc.

You cant go wrong with any of those neighborhoods you mentioned. Anything from Hilton village up the river to about Denbigh Plantation/Menchville area and you are golden. Basically when looking at a map of NN, the area between the river and Warwick Boulevard and between Mercury and Menchville roads. There are other areas such as Kiln Creek, Colony Pines and Port Warwick that are great as well. Stay away from the areas south of Mercury (except Huntington Heights) and parts of Denbigh

Thanks, Damian! You're one of the ones who steered me toward these areas three months ago. I would have saved myself a lot of time (and gas money!) if I'd listened to you then!

I have family that lives in those areas, so I am there quite a bit (going there tonight as a matter of fact). I love going to NN - especially the shopping. Everything is pretty close together near the mall and I can run my errands easier in NN than on the southside.
I like the historical quality of Hilton Village, but I think you will find that it is a bit further away from the action than you would like (at least over time). Driving up and down Warwick is hit or miss - they have been working on that road since I have lived here (6 years!!).
All the other neighborhoods are nice, established areas. Check out Kiln Creek too, although that may be a bit pricier than the other neighborhoods.

But to the thread starter the areas you picked are fine, cant really say too many positive things about newport news public schools overall, but it seems your child might be able finagle his way between decent & good schools due to the locations your choosing, so good luck.
