My husband worked up in Newport News for the past six weeks and loved it. I visited him this past weekend and loved it as well. My question is what other cities in central VA are similar to NN but are located on the other side of the James River. Anything west of the river all the way to the mountains.

The sheer population of Newport News, as well as its proximity to other large cities as well as decent inter-regional transportation make it nearly impossible to find anything like it. Especially in any other part of Virginia.

Lynchburg or Danville may be the closest, but they're way too small to be that similar.

If you severed Newport News from the rest of Hampton Roads to have it stand by itself as a city, then maybe Roanoke. But like already said it's in a unique spot that makes it hard to compare to the rest of the state.

No I don't believe you can really compare NewPort News to any other area, nor are there any quite like it. I'm going to have to say nope to this one.

very difficult to compare....NN is so integrated in HR that you really cannot have it stand alone
