Default Question about Urban/Suburban/Rural classification in our metro

I've always viewed Norfolk and Virginia Beach as the central city of our metro, with Norfolk being the obvious urban core + financial center, and Chesapake, Suffolk, Newport News, and Hampton being the suburbs. Then Smithfield,Isle of Wight, Moyac, NC, Poquoson, etc. being the rural suburbs (since people commute into the metro).

Is this how you see it? Or do you see it as each to their own and no real suburbs?

I'll always think of Chesapeake as a suburb of Norfolk, but how about you?

Norfolk/Portsmouth/Southern Hampton/DT NN-East End- Central "city"
VB/Chesapeake/rest of Hampton, NN, York County, JCC, Northern Suffolk- suburbs
Poquoson, Glouscester, IOW county, currituck, rest of Suffolk- exurbs, rural

I think with the plan to develop a world class metropolitan core downtown in Pembroke and having almost have a million residents gives VB the right to claim central "City"

Other than that, that's prettymuch what I thought

Pembroke/TC is just older suburbs infilling. Think Tysons Corner, buckhead...VB can claim to be a central city by population, but it is mostly a bedroom community to Norfolk.

No way. I think of Chesapeake as simply a more rural Va. Beach, w/o the beach. Nothing like Norfolk whatsoever.

Chesapeake is just another suburban area for people who who work in Norfolk or in VA Beach...basically, it is what virginia beach was in the 70s and 80s.

Think Richmond- suburban counties include Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover

Norfolk- suburban counties Princess Anne (va beach); Norfolk county (chesapeake), Nansemond county (suffolk). You can technically add Warwick (Newport News) and Elizabeth City County ( Hampton)

Norfolk is the city and Isle of Wight and Suffolk are rural.
Everything else - suburban.
