No nature or scenery IMHO.
I'm from the northeast and would prefer that to this area.
My parents are moving to Florida, I'd stick to Florida if I were you honestly, trust me, living here isn't all that "glamourous"
After my husband finishes up his term in the Navy, we're getting the heck out of this area.
There are so many military families and single men here so unless you are a homosexual, I don't think you'd have a good time here.
Also, the traffic in VA beach is crazy, Suffolk had a tornado in April of 2008, Norfolk floods like crazy, and the city ignorantly spent much of it's money on a train which is causing construction that just makes things congested.
And, I don't think you'll be too satisfied with the drivers here in Hampton Roads. A lot of the military likes to party and drunk driving results, which the cops don't do much about (Back in Connecticut, they're actually strict about drunk driving).
Crime is a problem and so are slum landlords/realtors who like to take advantage of those new to the area (mostly military)
All of this I know because I've spoken with people and saw it with my own eyes. I would not state something I did not know fully about.
I'm not saying that this is the most horrible place to live, but, it doesn't seem the type of place for a single 50 year old who is looking to settle down and live.
You'd definitely be happier somewhere else.
I know I will.
Florida's nice... Sarasota, West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, etc.

People like "Ginger_beauty" are the biggest problem Hampton Roads has. So many transient military people that don't really want to live here. They tend to rant and trash talk a place that they know little about while not supporting local businesses, art, music and regionalism.
I'm not bashing you directly, there are thousands just like you and apparently several of them like to post in this forum to warn people not to move here.

I just got here from COS and now living in Williamsburg, VA. Things that I miss about CO is the weather, the mountains, being able to "see" out (trees prohibit that), less traffic, how conservative it is, and the cost of living, the school system.
We moved here for DHs job but will probably return when we have the chance. This beats him being unemployed. Feel free to PM me with questions.

Exactly. People who didnt' grow up here don't understand and don't even take the time to realize how good this region is.

Ha ha, I don't have to grow up here to realize how horrible this place is. Trust me, I honestly don't and I'm glad I didn't.

Hey, it's YOUR city that causes us military folk to be forced to live here due to all of the bases around. Try getting rid of the bases, you'll get rid of us.
Thank your wonderful city for getting us stuck here and for you having to deal with us lol.
And trust me, I've talked to people, did my research, and this city is for some people, but I personally don't like it. There are just better places out there for me and Hampton Roads is at the bottom of the list. Sorry you're so offended but everyone has a right to freedom of speech and I don't like it here. A few people that I don't know on a forum isn't going to make me think twice about it.
Sure there are positives here like there are everywhere. but I've done a lot of traveling and this place is not my cup of tea. Okay, sure, it may be yours, but it's not mine.

I completely understand not everybody likes the same things, but some of the things said on this forum (not saying from you) are so untrue.

People like Ginger_beauty are the ones that people thinking of moving here should listen to the most. They have lived in various places and have a basis for comparison. People that have lived here all of their lives do not know what living in another city is like.

Believe me, if I could get out of HR I would leave immediately. My wife's family is here and she will probably never let us move . So not everyone can just pick up and leave. I really wish I did like it here, I really do. But when you realize what you will have to pay for a house, or how much it costs to raise a family, or how after 5 years of living somewhere you don't know any of your neighbors, or how bland this area really is, you start to hate it here.
