Default 2010 Census: HR Population Up? Or down?

What do you guys think? Did we grow or shrink over the past 10 years? Any cities that you think grew, while others shrank?

I think we will see that Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Newport News grew. And Hampton and Portsmouth stayed the same.

My prediction based on jobs, construction, and just overall trend. Obviously there is little fact, just my thoughts. From largest to smallest.

Virginia Beach: 442,000 (2010)
Norfolk: 237,000
Chesapeake: 225,000
Newport News: 185,000
Hampton: 146,000
Portsmouth:103,000
Suffolk: 85,000

It is such a transient area, it is always fluctuates. IMO, it has grown.

I think the whole area probably grew very slightly.

I think Norfolk and Virginia Beach lost residents, while Chesapeake and Suffolk picked them up. I think Portsmouth grew very slightly, while Hampton and Newport News stay steady.

I agree also with random and rt,

In the 1990s HR grew about 9%; I think this time it will be 6-7%. Not bad, but not great either; A growth rate of 10-11% is ideal, healthy; without overburdening the localities.

I would bet that the metro as a whole grew, just don't know by how much. maybe by 50,000-70,000 based on past census datas. With the trend being focused on urban environments and walkability I would assume Norfolk might pick up a few residents, considering there is so much construction going on downtown. Even Richmond is estimated to have increased in population, so I wouldn't hesitate to assume the same of Norfolk. And Va Beach is so big landwise I wouldn't doubt it gained in population, Chesapeake as well. Ditto on Suffolk.

You can't forget James City County and York County which have collectively gained about 20,000 or more residents since 2000, with most of it occurring in JCC.

JCC has gone from about 48,000 to about 63,000, and York County has gone from about 56,000 to 62,000/65,000 (Census v. Weldon Cooper estimates).

Other counties such as Currituck, Glouscester, and Isle of Wight have also grown, though probably not as much as JCC and YC; the localities of Williamsburg, and Poquoson have probably grown, but they are so small that the numbers are not that large

That's a good point damian. Isle of Wight has grown by about 6,000 or more residents from around 29,000 to about 36,000, and Currituck has also gained about 6,000 residents from about 18,000 to about 24,000. Gloucester has grown at a slightly slower pace from about 35,000 to 39,000.
