Virginia weather?
My husband and I are considering moving from Ohio to somewhere where it is warm in the winter. Is Virginia the place to go? His arthritic knee really hates cold and snow.

I think it's dumb cold here in the winter. Some days i wake up and it's 15-20 degrees outside.
But when that happens its always clear and sunny

The winter in HR is usually pretty mild. You will have days like cityboi that said are really cold but 15-20 degrees is rare. It might be 30 degrees one day and the next might be like 50.

True its milder here but there is a difference from what I have been told from northerners who move here. They say they feel colder here because its a damp cold whereas up north its a dryer cold.

Cold is just so subjective. Right now it's 50 degrees out and It's cold to me.

You are right, it is all what you are acclimated to.

True if the northers do not live near water. Midwesterners on the other hand shouldn't be bothered by it too much. I enjoy this winter weather rather than the blizzards I was raised in and the frozen tundra temps.

I guess it all depends on what you consider warm.....as you did not state some placer warmer then Ohio but some place warm in general.....warm to me would be Fla or some where along the gulf coast or further west into the desert area.
Much of Virginia has pretty much the same winter temps as Ohio......The Hampton Roads area is spared much of the really nasty weather due to being close to or on the coast, the only problem with that is it makes the cold feel much more damp and not dry like places inland....Most people seem to have more arthritic problems with damp winters/humid summers this area in known for then what they would have in a more dry climate. The dampness makes the temps feel colder in the winter time and the humidity makes it feel hotter in the summer time then what the actual temperature really is.....You may want to get your husband to check with his doctor and see what he/she recommends

Yes, this area is pretty mild compared to Ohio's winters. However, I have been planning a move more South because this weather makes me ache so bad. My joints lock up and I waddle like a penguin. I just came back from a week and a half in Florida and I did not ache there at all, not even after walking miles and miles each day around the amusment parks. I came back home and halfway here I started locking up from the cold. (I am 41 by the way if that matters any).
I never considered the cold vs. dry before....but now that it's mentioned that makes sence. I lived in S. Korea for 3 years and they had some really cold, harsh winters, but I was just fine. I was inland, not near any water. I grew up in Oklahoma, the winters were pretty cold with lots of snow, but as the previous poster mentioned, a dry cold. Here in HR, just a little cold and wind and it gets right into my bones.

Absolutely not!
My knees are shot as well and although the winters are not as bad as N.J., but winter still gets cold. And in summer the humidity will drive your knee insane.
