Rank of HR Localities by Median Household Income
I just thought it would be interesting to make a list of all of HR's localities by median household income (2007 Census estimates) for anyone who is curious. Virginia's MHI was $59,575.

Poquoson: $78,191
James City County: $70,487
Chesapeake: $63,016

Isle of Wight County: $58,840
Suffolk: $57,546
Gloucester County: $56,123
Mathews County: $54,431
Hampton: $46,462
Newport News: $44,887
Williamsburg: $43,777
Portsmouth: $42,940
Norfolk: $40,295

It is indeed odd that Mathews is that high, considering that its population has been declining and is so far out as an exurb with the only major thing being a fishing industry.

I forgot to include Currituck County, NC: $52,893. North Carolina's MHI was $44,772.

Probably people that commute way out there, trying to escape the "city."
Some other report showed that gov't related $$ is the top paying industry in Hampton Roads. It ranks higher than business executive pay on average.

I'm not surprised. Growing up in Yorktown, most of my friends' parents either had high-paying jobs at NASA or somewhere in Oyster Point, or were high-ranking military people at Langley or Ft. Eustis.

It's great that Virginia Beach, a City of 440,000 residents has that high a median income.
