My husband and I just recently purchased a home in Portsmouth. We've owned the property for almost 2 weeks now and have yet to get water. Apparently, there is a lien on the property, which I've gone after my title search company for, and there isn't. Seems to be more of an outstanding balance. I've contacted Portsmouth Public Utilities and left several messages with the Manager who has yet to call me back. I am set to move into this house with my children tomorrow and have no running water. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get this matter resolved? Thanks in advance!

Perhaps you could look at speaking to an attorney... or even making a personal visit to the manager in question?

Quick Edit:

The people I bought the house from lived in the home for what would have been 14 years this upcoming April. The balance is from March 1995. I was told they will not turn the water on until the balance is paid. So why, after 14 years, are they going to turn the water off? Is it me, or can this not be right?

Sounds like a pain. You need to skip the lower level customer service people and talk to someone important.

Should be a directory at portsmouthva.gov

If they don't turn it on tomorrow then I'd just go out in the yard and find the valve and do it yourself. They use a T-handle tool to do it but you can get it with a big pair of pliers and some strength. If they ask just tell them it was on when you moved in.

Also be prepared to pay the highest refuse fees ever. My trash pickup is $40.72 a month now.

Mikeas --

I talked to the Manager at Public Utilities...he was basically no help at all. Told me I need to pay it or I don't get water. I am not paying almost $500, without the interest and late fees! That is RIDICULOUS!

I sent an Email to the City Manager but do plan on making a phone call if it does not get resolved. I will also be showing myself at Public Utilities tomorrow morning.

Oh, and I just might have to turn the water on myself!
