I've visited HR area traveling for work. After being here for about 5mo's I've developed an outlook on it that while scenic in area's it's funny laws and money-grab, tic-a-cop, braggadocio attitude a bit too much.

While I support the military, I believe they are a part of the 'state' of the mentality of the area. Also CIA, Quantico, BlackWater and a whole lot of other sh*t -- not to mention the undercovero's (unmarked cars sneak-op'ing around) just seems like this whole area is sullied by over enthuistiastic policing, laws and scant employers promoting distrust and paranoia amongst people. Seems like alot of folks are awful busy looking around trying to get the drops on what the next guy is getting \ doing so that back-bitting is a way of life here.

Sorry too many black helicopters and fuhgedaboutit if you have a sports car, you're gonna hafta drive that bad mofo in grandma mode all around or face a poop-your-pants ticket.

I'm leaving now. Like I said eventually I grew to appreaciate the area, but to be truly 'metro' you gotta be a bit more progressive and have a common identity with prosperity for everyone. And what's with the many economically sick developed from being un\underemployed? Don't you know thats a bad vibe that'll keep people away. And locking up the underprivileged an answer either -- just more judicial bad karma.

Oh and did I mention that you need a common identity? So far I can't figure out if I'm in the south, the north, Boston or the twilight zone. There is metro city-envy here, and you can't make yourselves what you are not by talk and swagger.

Why, Chuck, didn't you know "HR is the most underrated metro in the US" Quit bragging. Quit Extoling. Just because you bought here don't mean it's great. BTW did I mention the housing prices? This a'int no Metropolis -- it's an AREA.

So right now I'm throwing up hand signs (picture this) V, A, and PEACE!!!! Ummm aought!!!

I concur that this area does lack identification, which is why I'm moving next year...even if it's scary. Though I don't enjoy my hometown, it is scary to leave the familiar. To those who love it, more power to you. It's just not for me.

Default You Can Do IT

SleepToDream: It's ok to be afraid.

I read something recently that said we all are afraid of the unknown -- even when we know the possibility of great prosperity awaits on the other side (paraphrased).

Growth is the outcome, and although growing isn't easy, it's well worth the journey.

Where do you plan to move to?

I completely agree with everything you've said. I moved here from Boston about 2 months ago and it is so completely different, and not in a good way. I dislike living in this area and hope to move back to Boston in the next year or so.

I'm looking for some place out west just for a complete change of scenery haha. I was thinking Nevada but people on that board say they are having lots of trouble right now?

I'm so scared I'll end up homeless because I won't be able to find work. I know I'm bored with Hampton Roads but at least I know where and where not to apply for jobs! I guess I should enact an exit plan before going.

I'm out too. I've been here for 2 years. I came for an awesome job opportunity and got laid off in July. One good thing is that I met my husband here (NOT a Navy guy!) and we are looking to get back to the large MW cities where we are from. I agree completely with the OP about everything.
