(and I'm not talking about those frozen things at Trader Joe's either - nasty!)

I'm looking for Christmas tamales and am coming up emptyhanded. I wanted to make them myself but I'm running out of time. Does anyone know where I can buy good, handmade tamales by the dozen here in the Hampton Roads area? And while we're on that topic, any good carnicerias, tortillerias, or panederias in the area? I'm looking anywhere from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg.

Tortilleria LA Morena is in Newport News, 11710 Jefferson Ave. It's near Port Warwick and City Center areas in the Food Lion shopping center. You can make large special orders there - I just don't like their prices.

Hmm, I tried to reply but it appears it never made it through. Anyway, thank you both. I will try each of them and report back.

Default tamales

we just had some for xmas from this restaurant in the back of the

"Grand Market" on Newtown Rd. After having tamales from the chicago area we were very disappointed. The chicken tamales had the whole piece of chicken in them including the bone and the skin and the masa was way too thick. if anyone knows a better place i would like to try. has anyone ever heard of tamales being made this way?

El Rey 2

849 East Little Creek Road

The tamales are $2 a piece or for around $7 you can get three with rice, beans, chips and salsa.

The tacos are my favorite, they make the corn tortillas to order and you can pick meats prepared in about 10 different ways.

Default Tamales

Wow..I wished Id read this earlier!! Id have been happy to make them for you..Not sure if you yourself are Mexican, but I was married to one for 23 yrs, and know the culture like the back of my hand.

I can do pozole, tamales (carne or dulce), horchata, chiles rellenos, whatever you want!! My pico de gallo is to DIE for! LOL

I have been in Va. on and off for 3 years and have yet to find GOOD real Mexican food. Or chinese food, or bagels, for that matter!!

Feliz Ano Nuevo!!
