Hi, I'm new here, and about to be new to the area, as well; I'm sure you've heard the same thing a million times from military folks moving to the area, and I'm hoping you can help me out as well. Thanks in advance! Here are the criteria I'm looking to satisfy:

well, a 30 minute commute, north of a tunnel is a bit to ask for because it can bite you either way and the HRBT makes no promises, especially in the summer and Fridays or Sundays. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge goes North, so you'd have to live in the Cape Charles area and that commute would not be 30 minutes. NAS Norfolk is connected to NNS where the ships are, so there is alot more traffic heading in your direction. There are some nice places near the CBBT area to live, but if you would prefer closer to NAS for yourself, then GHENT may be your answer for back and forth down Hampton Blvd. JMO

Well, when I said "north of the tunnel," I meant the I-64 tunnel, not the CBB/T; how are the neighborhoods in/around Hampton and Newport News, and what do you think the commute would be like from those areas? Thanks again for your advice.

There are a lot of great places in Hampton & Newport News ... but that tunnel commute on a daily basis is a killer .... always a backup or complete blockage. One day you can get from Hampton to Norfolk base in 15 mins ... next commute 2 hrs. I'd stay on the southside in Norfolk or VaBeach

Agree with that. Like I said, there are some nice places near the CCBT like Chicks Beach which your wife would enjoy when she visits. Ghent is near the base without actually getting on the interstate. Ocean View is outside the NAS gate, but the areas are hit and miss to find a place within your price range.

The tunnel is your drawback by working on one side of the water and wanting to live on the other. This time of year is the slow season at the tunnel but just last Saturday I was stuck in a 3-4 mile backup which is common even on the weekends, once summer gets here that back up can extend to 8 plus miles...now toss in a break down or an accident and you can be stuck in traffic that does not move for hours....just google HRBT and read some of the horror stories about the tunnel.

would you consider sharing a house?
Steeev, I know you said you were looking for a town house but.... I have a 3 br 2 ba home & am looking for a roommate. Live just outside gate 4 a NAS. Rent is $550.00 includes utilities. fully furnished. I have a 2nd option i can rent ....the 2 back bed rooms private bath so if you wife visits you might be more comfortable. That's renting for $650. It's a nice quiet house. I am 48 years old . Professional female. Work for the NEX corp. HQ. as a designer.
