Hey Glo,
I've lived in Hampton most my life.If you can afford to live in poquson I'd live there.Theres hardly any crime and neighbors look out for one another. The schools are excellent. Its only a 20-25 min drive to the Va hospital.Take interstate maybe 15-20.My husband and I are moving to East Tn in less than 3 weeks to get away from the Boom boom boxes, traffic, noisy neighbors and to have a better place to raise our daughter.I love Hampton but its not like it used to be.Good luck!

From the news and stories from friends, I'd say Hampton is a medium crime city compared to the others in the Hampton Roads region.

I lived in a tough apt complex in Hampton (Lakeshore) and a sfh in York County (Yorkshire Downs). I had a burlgary in York Co. and it seemed that more cop cars came out in my part of York Co. than in Hampton. Anyway i think Hampton gets a raw deal when you are talking about crime. I live outside DC and PG county in MD and i would run back to Hampton before i move to those other areas. Hampton's crime is around the national average. i think with some decent management by the city's new mayor Hampton can improve greatly on crime and schools.

Good part I liked about Hampton Roads, is it is not a "County" so I dont think you have County taxes. Least thats what I heard, I was only there for a month. I enjoyed Virginia beach just 30 minutes away!!

So it looks like between Hampton & Newport News some like Hampton & some Newport News. What would be the best for a young family with school age kids?? Any area in particular I should avoid; any I should consider? Tell me more! Thanks- appreciate it very much!

I would try to get zoned for Francis Asbury or Phillips ES. They are best that Hampton has to offer. However That may not be saying much. I graduated from Kecoughtan it was OK my mom taught at Phebous (avoid it). I would say Newport News has better schools but I'll stay in VA Beach over priced or not, just for the schools.
