Freemason is probably more safe then Ghent because its not really a through-fare and most everyone you see there lives there. I have heard about people getting their cars broken into but that is about it.

I will say that the Ghent establishments are more lively during the week than most of the downtown places which pickup significantly on the weekends.

I read altdaily.com / 24sevencities.com and hamptonroads.com (which is the virginian pilot). I'm sure there are more but I haven't bothered finding them.

I agree. Looking at a crime map, there's more instances in Ghent than Freemason. Most likely due to the exact reasons you posted: there's not really any bars/restaurants for people to go to. Since it's mainly just residential, the majority of people in Freemason are there because they live there.

This is a decent food blog, but I think they basically quit posting.

Awesome, thanks again for everyone's help.

Now have another question for y'all: after realizing that finding a decent 1-bedroom in Ghent will run me somewhere between $800 and $1200, I'm becoming more and more willing to live with a random/randoms. Anyone know of a place to find roommate listings, aside from Craigslist? I signed up for roommates.com but am reluctant to spend the money for a full membership when I'm hesitant about living with someone else anyway. Anyone looking for a roommate in the Ghent/Freemason areas? Any help is greatly appreciated.
