BTW, I have hit Dairy Queens in other states when I travel around and have noticed that some are way better than others. The ones around here are terrible IMHO though.
I love Arby's vanilla milkshakes as well and they are closest so far in taste to old soft serve I think.

Never tried The Skinny Dip Frozen Yogurt Bar - HOME, but people rave about it (it's frozen yogurt)

Are there any Cold Stones in Hampton Roads? If so, i would suggest there. Norfolk Icecream is a good place as well. Very kids friendly.

Went to a place called Yogurt Bistro in the Kempsville Crossing shopping center off of Indian River Road. Delicious soft serve yogurt. Very nice Asian lady showed me how to purchase. It's self serve with many different flavors (French Vanilla= Heaven) and yummy fresh topping bar (Cheesecake chunks= Heaven). You fill the cup and weigh it when you check out. Almost 8 bucks for me today-- = ouch-- but I had a large cup with heavy toppings.
Check it out, probably the best yogurt I've ever had.

Tried The Skinny Dip at Hilltop last weekend-- IMHO good but not near as good (or as cheap) as Bravos.

Also tried a place outside of Williamsburg yesterday. Queen Anne's Dairy Snack. Vanilla cone very tasty (cone was a tiny bit stale though, try a cup) and miles above anything you'll get at Dairy Queen. It's a tiny place, kind of run down looking but seems to be popular..

Queen Anne Dairy Snack - Williamsburg, VA
