Hey everyone, I had a quick question about the turnpike. We are currently living in Delaware, but are from Ohio and wanting to go home for Christmas. We get on the Turnpike at Harrisburg and stay on it until the Ohio line. Anyways, I know everyone has been getting a lot of snow, and I'm a little paranoid to drive through the mountains on the turnpike with any winter conditions. Do they keep the roads clear? Is it a bad drive? Or do you know of a different route that would be better? Sorry so many questions, and thanks for any answers!

Shouldn't be bad with a little snow, and it's without a doubt the least snow-y of the possibly westward routes. Your alternate interstates are 80 and 68, both of which go through more mountainous terrain than the Turnpike does.

Obviously if there's a huge blizzard, all bets are off. As long as the forecast doesn't call for that, I wouldn't worry.

Edit: I should probably clarify that while a little snow is not usually a problem, sleet can be much worse. If conditions get icy quickly, this presents much more of a hazard than any snow would. The roads are salted well but check the weather before venturing out.

In my experience, the turnpike is generally in better condition than most of the Interstates around here.

Thanks so much! I thought I should ask here, a girl from PA told me 80 would be better, but after research it didn't seem like it would be

I drive all three routes west with some regularity and the Turnpike is almost always the best for snow removal in the mountains.

We've gone from Va. to Pgh. on 68 in wintry conditions - they keep the roads clear but as has been stated, it's more mountainous (thus colder) and if there's any wind, that blows snow right back onto the road.
