Hello folks, I just moved from TX to Harrisburg, and I need to register my vehicle. I already have my PA driver's license, now do I need to take my truck to an inspection site first and then after it's inspected for emisions, I go to pennDOT to register it? I'm kinda lost. Has anyone gone through this process lately?

any help would be appreciated!

Vehicle registration is privatized in PA. https://www.notary.org/Search/Notary/

(If you are a member of AAA that may be the easiest place to go: AAA Central Penn - Contact Us )

The vehicle needs to be registered and insured first before they will inspect it. Those are the 2 things they ask for when you go to get a vehicle inspected. And while you do not necessarily have to go to PennDot, it would be better since you could get all the official paperwork right then and there, as opposed to doing it online and waiting a few days for it to arrive in the mail. You can print out a temporary registration if you do it online, although I'm not sure if that's the case with an out of state transfer. And I if they would still inspect it if was the temporary registration.

If you have your title with you, the stay at PennDot should be a short one. I transferred everything from Maryland and the visit took 15 minutes, then getting the vehicle inspected wan't an issue, plenty of time to get that done. I went to a local Ford Dealership and had it completed in about an hour. I agree, a direct visit to PennDot would be better.

Start with PennDot office visit or AAA. You'll get a temporary license/tags and a time limit to get the vehicle inspected. It's easy!
