I currently live in New Cumberland, 83 is seconds from my house. I am considering a commute to Woodlawn, MD, which is 83 to I659W. Mapquest shows an estimate of Via I-83 S 1 hour 18 mins / 73.16 miles. Is this a 'best case' commute? Im not going to downtown Baltimore but I am hitting the outer loop and heading west of Baltimore. Im thinking that I might have it a bit better since I am not going south towards DC.

Yep, crazy~83South in the AM is often close to a crawl (weather, accident, repair of road)~evens out in early MD, but once you get to Hunt Valley it's a nightmare. Hunt Valley/Towson/WhiteMarsh is gridlock. Your last 20 miles might take you up to an hour. Give yourself 2 hours each way for cushion.

I work in Woodlawn, and at least where I am we do have some people who commute down from PA, however I think most are from near York, so not as far up as you are. It could be doable I suppose, if long commutes don't bother you or if your job offers perks like working from home one day a week, or something else.

Thanks for the advice! Ker, any sense of a timeframe between York and where you work? New Cumberland to York adds about 10 to 15 mins to my commute. My concern is the traffic once I hit Hunt Valley.

I did this for about 2 years and it wasn't too bad. The trick is you have to leave EARLY. If I left by 6am I would get there by 7am with smooth sailing all the way. Every 15 mins later I would leave, would tack about 30 mins more onto my arrival time. Eventually I got a small studio apartment down there and that made things a bit easier. Commuting is definitely possible, but don't fool yourself. It's not easy. Good luck!

Are you satisfied with these answers? 83S can be very very backed up for the last 5-10 miles before merging onto 695. From there to Woodlawn will also be stacked up more often than not. You would certainly be well advised to be well ahead of the traffic morning and night! If it rains or snows you might as well stay home...

Thanks for the input everyone. Before I accept an offer I am gonna take the trip myself to see what it's like. I believe its doable but might get old fast... who knows. Again, thanks for the input everyone!

I did this for five years until I burnt out. Like someone else said...get in early, get out early and make sure they know you are a long distance commuter and find out their policy on tardiness up front. If they are strict I would forget it, otherwise if the money is worth the aggrevation of fighting traffic twice a day for four hours, go for it. It makes for a long day.
