Alternatives for Inter-Island travel are all but dead, thanks to the whiny crybabies who effectively shut down our ONLY inter-island *FERRY* (the loudest protesters thought they were expressing legitimate concerns over "traffic congestion" or "environmental impact" or whatever fantasy they had dancing in their heads, and didn't have the sophistication to realize that they were merely manipulated puppets on strings, playing right into the hands of the inter-island airlines and outer-island car rental establishments -- ESPECIALLY the latter, who stood to get a huge chunk of revenue chomped out of their okole because the SuperFerry permitted passengers to island-hop accompanied by their *OWN* vehicles!)
Sure, it was a "private" service, but it was a good start, and there were plans to include others vessels and extend routes. In time, once the project expanded, the state politicians might have eventually been struck with a little spark of inspiration to consider aquiring the fleet from the private owners and run it as a state-funded (similar to the Galveston/Bolivar system) or combination tax-funded/passenger-fee based (similar to "TheBus") inter-island operation, and called it the "H-4." But we were NEVER given the chance to see if Hawaii nei had any true "visionaries" in her bosom. An utter shame.
Yeah..why would they stop "the boat"? Seeing as there are 8 islands? I don't get it.
Some clarification, amber:
"TheBoat" was not an "interisland" operation; it was an extention of Oahu's "TheBus" transit system. You live in the Northeast: think of in terms of the "Park & Ride" rail transit systems I'm sure you're familiar with, then you'll better grasp the concept.
