Aloha everyone,

I just noticed all the hype in the news today about Hawaii getting reminants of a radioactive cloud coming from Japan. How concerned are all of you?

I havent seen anything like that on the news here. Last I saw was that there was no danger of that happining. But at any rate I'm not concerned. Nothing I can do about it so why worry.

There is no iodine of any sort left in any of the drugstores and my neighbor has a geiger counter set up to keep track of any radiation if it appears, other than that, no worries. Actually, I find the neighbor's geiger counter rather reassuring. If there is any radiation, they will let us know and I trust them much more than our public sources of information.

From what I can tell, any radiation will be heading up towards lower Canada, Washington, Oregon and upper California instead of Hawaii. The wind pattern from Japan sort of swirls up in that direction instead of going directly towards Hawaii even though we are closer.

Should we get radiation, there are some things you can do to mitigate the effects, but until it arrives, there isn't a lot to do to prepare. Especially since all iodine supplies are already gone. Iodine supplements are mostly for younger folks, though, folks under forty they say. The other thing to do about the radiation is not to drink or eat any milk or cheese from areas which have radioactive fallout. I would think it would also affect the beef as well, but apparently after Chernobyl many of the folks who had radiation poisoning got it from consuming products from animals who ate the radiated grasses.

There is no radiation to worry about, or actually no radiation in Hawaii or California. It's just the mass media selling papers.

I live in Tokyo and have a geiger counter. (I am an engineer here). Radiation levels are completely normal in this city. Just a bunch of gaijin (foreigners) reading their media from other countries who have no idea what's going on here.

Yeah we in Japan know the government is telling us little white lies, but nothing to be concerned so much about as much as some people are. I heard from my family in North Carolina that even people in the East Coast are buying out Iodine pills. Completely stupid and wasting money, not to mention taking Iodine is NOT a good thing and can cause severe health defects.

I don't get it.

First, you are repeating a "scare tactic" news story, from the media, as fact.

Then, you deride a comment FROM THE MEDIA that says there's nothing to worry about.

Pick a side.
