Can anyone from (or who knows about) the Nanawale Estates area let me know how bad the earthquake was? Is there any major damage? Is everyone ok? I am so glad the hurricane is not supposed to be a direct hit. I am wishing the best for you all. Aloha, Julie (currently in AZ)

Officially, last night's earthquake was a 5.4 on the Richter scale and the epicenter was near Kalapana. For the most part, there seems to be no major damage and other than being a little shaken up, everyone's probably okay.

Currently, Hurricane Flossie seems to be stalled and weakening at about 160 miles south of the Big Island....

I just took a drive through Hilo...a few boarded up or taped up windows, but several restaurants open. The tarps have been placed on the ground at the Farmer's Market--that looked a little odd. The bay is pretty calm but it is misty up the coast.

Still plenty of people out and about. Frisbee game going on at the soccer field. Wal-mart parking lot was full, but the mall is closed. KTA parking lot full as well.

Schools are closed again tomorrow, but it looks like the hurricane is still weakening as it approaches...

The Hawaiian Islands are fortunate to be surrounded by relatively cool water temperatures which helps weaken these storms as it approaches the Islands.

First I want to say that I love reading everyone's posts. My husband and I are planning a move to Oahu within the year. I'm very excited and I constantly read these posts to find out about my new home.

I just have a question. Does it ever scare anyone when they talk about hurricanes and tsunami's? That is the only thing that frightens me about living out in the middle of the ocean. I'm sure there are tons of safety precautions the islands have. Anyone have anything to abate my fears?

Aloha PAgirl Unless you are going to be living right on or near the beach, most of the city is high enough to be safe from tsunami. There are sirens at populated shore locations all around all the islands and clearly marked evacuation routes. The Pacific Tsunami Center constantly monitors quakes all over the Pacific and can have beaches evacuated sometimes hours before a wave is expected. We were lucky with hurricane Flossie. We do worry some about hurricanes, but it's no different here than any coast anywhere.
