Here's a new business that is not doing very well:
Hawaii Superferry halts Kauai route - The Honolulu Advertiser
What do you think the police would have done in New York, or Los Angeles, or Galveston, if a bunch of protesters on surfboards had tried to stop a ship from entering port?

From a fellow Virgo,
I've lived in Hawaii Kai now for over a year and we've seen one giant red centipede. Crawled across our living room floor and scared us to death! I'm so hopeful that we won't see another one in the house or yard and wonder if they come off the golf course?
Mice are another problem. Right now I have a (maybe more?) acrobatic mouse in the house that somehow scales the 2 feet tall legs of our Cockatiel's cage, somehow grabs food from his dish, climbs all the way to the top of the cage and eats it (also droppings). I'm too much of an animal lover to actually kill this little one, but am getting tired of cleaning up the droppings it leaves behind.
I love the Geckos but not the giant cockroaches.
Other things to hate about Hawaii:
Poor drivers
Congested highways (my commute daily is 3 hours now that school is back in)
Racism/ignorance
Expensive everything (not just housing)
Poor salaries for jobs
I could go on but I think everyone who read my previous posts knows why I'm moving back to the mainland!!!

Yes, I also got plenty of aloha spirit from people I have casual relationships with. I also made friends with my neighbors and found things in common. This is exactly my point. When you get a job with your neighbor and every person he or she grew up with and the aloha only goes so far, then we can compare apples to apples. I have worked in many different cultures and been a minority. It is not the same. I'm not saying that I don't understand why it is this way, just pointing out that it made a difficult job exponentially more difficult.

I hate that people who have houses don't take more care of them. Some of them get so run down that it takes away from the beauty of the island. Out of fairness, I know people don't always have the time and money to fix what needs to be fixed. It is just frustrating to see all the run down houses that are structurally fine, but need some yard-work or a coat of paint. There is such cultural pride here (everyone is proud of who they are and where they come from) that I am surprised it doesn't carry over into their homes more.

I am thinking it is maybe most the men there work 2 or 3 jobs just to make ends meet. The time they do have probably they want to spend with family.

I hate that Hawaii is sinking and the beach is disappearing at an exponential rate. I believe it is 1/2 inch per year. I've noticed within 10 years how much sand is gone. I think it's time to import more in from Australia.

People who use the word haole to refer to caucasians. It means breathless, without soul. That would seem to apply to some locals too. Get it together, we are all the children of the earth. Aloha

I miss the bufos, they have all but disappeared from Kihei on Maui. And according to GB, the sand would be coming from Austria, not Australia. There's nothing I hate about Hawaii, but it is sad that people, primarily newcomers and tourists are in such a hurry, the usual 8 days 3 island tour, we've gotta get to Lahaina, then Hana, Iao Valley, and don't forget the drive to Haleakala!!! I guess that's where the old need a vacation after your vacation comes from. And the population increase with no, or very little, infrastructure improvents to keep up with the increase. When I moved here the population was around 60,000 in Maui county, now it's over 150,000, and that doesn't include tourists. Ahhhh, the good old days...
Aloha and okolemaluna

Right on, Sorcerer. And I don't even mind the older plantation houses that have the worn away paint. I've found a few to be quite charming. But not if there is a junkyard in the front lawn or spilling out of a garage!
