Our container was $5952. That was from Denver to Lahaina, delivered door-to-door. I think that, in general, and especially household moves, weight does not factor in. You get the container, you get to fill it. Keep in mind, you are responsible for loading and unloading, so we were pretty involved ourselves on both ends, but we did hire some help on either end for the heavy stuff. After the botched move with the first company, I was actually glad to have more control over the process.

We are also moving to the island with our dogs-- big ones! Our smallest is 88 pounds and the 4 largest is over 150lbs. They all need ex-large or giant kennels. The main problem we are having is finding airlines that will take large sizes. Your dog should be ok. That size is the max on Alaska Airlines, but NW will do our giant ones...if we drive them 18 hours to get them to a major airport. The cost for our 5 dogs will be almost $4000 as cargo (just for airfare), but you can probably manage to pay for oversized baggage and take it on your flight for less than shipping as cargo. My guess is you should plan on it costing between $600-1000. We bred and ship dogs and cargo and baggage fare has gone up a lot in the past couple years.

Just remember that your quarentine procedures must be done 4+ months before you move.

We are already here and living on Oahu. Our 16 boxes and small desk are on the mainland. We will not be packing ourselves. We are going to use a freight forwarder who is the friend of one of our kids (the "kid" is 36). The forwarder will arrange to have our items wrapped, the desk in bubble wrap, moved across country from Georgia, put on a ship and delivered to port in Honolulu. We will pick our items up there. We do not plan to scrap the desk as it is the only item we are keeping from our 41 years of marriage. Luckily it is small - a ladies piano-hinge style from the 20's that belonged to my mother-in-law.
We plan to send for our items around October. We will report here the process and results with this freight forwarder and let the community know if she is someone you can use and trust.
