Those who know of employment available/potential opportunities post here.
NO SPAM, WHATSOEVER;
Please answer the following:
1. Island and area of island
2. Type of job (industry)/name of employer if you can release that
3. Any skills needed/info known about job (pay/benefits/hours, etc.)/anything else relevant.
I want this to be a very active link so that those people who know of job openings can post what they know for the rest of people who may be looking for jobs. Kind of an aloha for the group.
(For example, at my job, I knew we would be hiring several people in the coming days, and that would be good info to help those who are interested in moving to or who live in the area, and may be unemployed or underemployed.)
Aloha and Mahalo.

Math Teachers...
If you might be interested in moving to Hawaii.... Baldwin High School has an immediate opening in the Math dept. One of my fellow teachers had to turn in a notice unexpectedly. I know it was really hard to find math teachers before the year started, so I expect they'll be having a hard time now as well. If you are certified to teach high school math and are interested in living on Maui, put in an application with the Hawaii DOE!!!

Is it true what they say?
Looks like it might be. Not one job posting on here yet. I am hoping to keep this alive, so if you know of a job, share your knowledge. (Since there are a number of people on here who are getting ready to move to the islands, I figured this might be a way to help them out.)
Aloha and Mahalo.

This may not be what you want but I'm posting it anyway: someone needs to open a full service auto spa in Hilo. Many people are moving from the mainland and they are buying/bringing really fancy cars and want to keep them clean...the only thing available is the gas station "put the quarters in and drive thru" station. If someone opened a place where you could pull up, leave it running, it gets hand vacumed, you can watch your car go thru the wash from an air conditioned waiting room that serves coffee and a plethora of overpriced junk...and you get it at the other end hand dried and ready to go. Premium waxing and detailing services available as well. Someone could cash in their equity and do this. You'd have no competition. People are crying for it. There are available locations for this and I've looked in the zoning and they allow them. You'd make a fortune. Obviously no "rain checks".

As long as the folks from the mainland don't wise up and realize the futility of trying to maintain a fancy car on the Hilo side, that "auto spa" idea might prove to be quite lucrative. However, it might be wise to see how business is doing at GTs Auto Detailing on Kanoelehua Ave. and at Island Auto & MC Detailing on Hinano St. before cashing in one's equity.

Thanks for those recommendations, Jonah. I usually do my own car here but after two trips through Fern Forest after rains and my cat walking through a tile project and leaving little grout footprints on the hood of my Jeep, it's time for a professional!
I also think a quick-service choose-from-our-menu style car care business would do well in Hilo--I would be a regular. Actually, I think Keaau would be a good location--the crossroads for Puna and Volcano traffic. (We keep hearing rumors of what the next business in Keaau will be, but few confirmations yet.)

It's really not the same thing. Compare going to a place like the Madrona Car Wash, leaving it running, getting a coffee drink, sitting in a plush chair in air conditioned comfort, buy a newspaper...and watching your beloved through tinted windows be mechanically scrubbed to whatever level of automated service you paid for and then pay the cashier buying overpriced air fresheners and such and pick up your hand dried car all in about 15 minutes...to taking your car to the detail shop and then??? Pacing in the parking lot, having a friend come get you and bring you back up to several hours later (I've had cars detailed in Hilo) or if you don't sit in a little waiting room on a hard chair that's like Goodyear or Firestone. It's not just getting your car detailed, it's also the experience and THAT is what a bajillion manland clients of mine whined about when relocating to East Hawaii. This makes it easy and enjoyable. It's also in and out with no appointment quickly as the place runs like a conveyor belt...literally. I'm telling you...this would take off. The amount of Mercedes, BMW and other fancy cars skyrockedted in my 4 years there. Being a Realtor in the area put me in touch with tons of transplants, they told me what they wanted. My info is current, I only left in April.
In Hawaii, just offer stellar service and do it better than anyone else. Give people they can't get anywhere else and they're all over it. I stand by my idea. I may open one there myself. I'd offer wifi, a Jamba like juice and coffee bar and ???

About the Auto Spa - I get my cars washed here using a Mobil Car Wash. It is great! The guy comes by my office once a week & washes my car in the parking lot. I also have had him do a full detail with wax & claybar & interior cleaning. It is very nice to have it that way. I think I pay a little extra, but its worth it. I just sit, he comes by, washes my car, I go to lunch in clean car. He also has come to my house to do all 3 of my cars at once. Again...convenience of not having to go anywhere to get the service.
Just a thought. Plus, it's also a less expensive startup since you are limited to what your van or truck will hold.

I think it's a fabulous idea myself. I was thinking it might be good to offer other services as well, thought not sure what. Was watching this thing on the travel channel recently (samantha brown was in Scandanavia) and she went into this Laundromat in Helsinki that had computers, and an actual restaurant that also had a bar (not best idea if they are driving ) but I just thought what a great idea, doing laundry is always a drag, especially if you have to haul it yourself, and you get to relax like you're on a little outing...
How about a little tapas bar or something? Oooh or maybe Sushi!!
Anyway, you should do it. Good Luck! or is it Mahalo?
