Of the two times in 30 plus years over here that I've been whacked by a centipede, one was out in Haiku, really muggy day, installing cabinets so I took off my t-shirt, tossed it onto the floor. You guessed it, put shirt back on, pede was inside, got nailed across my chest, but, as I recall, it wasn't all that painful. Second time I'm helping to move an old sugar cane camp home from Puunene up to Lower Kula, I'm underneath this 100 year old home, helping to jack it up, same damn thing. Centipede gets into my t-shirt, (thank God it wasn't my pants), gives me a thorough stinging, nothing I can do because I have to crawl out from under the house to get the shirt off. Hurt for a bit, but not that bad. I guess they either are more or less venemous, or perhaps people are allergic, much like a bee sting, and have violent reactions.
I seem to have a very bad reaction to box jellyfish stings, was out paddling on my racing kayak once, jellyfish got tangled on my paddle, in the process of trying to get rid of it, it stung me multiple times on the upper leg. Hurt like crazy! Paddled back in, lifeguard/fellow paddler sprayed it with some vinegar, pain was gone.

According to my recently pau best friend, Kahale Akina, my aumakua is the mo'o, judging by the number of resident gheckos on my lanai windows every night, I'm certainly not suprised. Mo'o-lizard, gheko

yep, my 'aumakua is the lizard, too. got so many around here. i guess they're doing their job because there's plenty of poop everywhere!
my friend actually had a roach in her ear. it drove her crazy! when she got to her doctor's office, the front desk person totally embarrassed her by saying way too loud, "mrs. -----------, how'd that roach get stuck in your ear?!" apparently, roaches can go in the ear canal but can't back out. i guess the same can be said for that centipede that was stuck in mshell's friend's ear. double eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww!

I leave a light on all night long by my lanai windows, light attracts the bugs, bugs attract the gheckos, instant buffet for the little mo'o.
My friend Kahale used to live in one of the sugar cane camps out in Puunene years ago, prior to television. Nights entertainment would be putting a lamp next to the window, and betting on which ghecko would catch the most bugs. Cheap entertainment, wish I could have been around for a few of those nights.

I don't know why it is, but Kailua, Kaneohe seem more prone to uku than does the leeward side. I did some projects for the military at KMBH, couldn't believe the bugs as opposed to my place on Nuuanu Ave. Worked on Richard Pryors house in Hana way back when, when Richard was in town, not much work got done,(guess why) but the bugs out in Hana are absolutely unbelievable, although not quite as bad as Hilo!! Poor Kolohe...
Perhaps you need some larger gheckos?

according to jungohann's 9-5-07 post, he had a centipede on his 15th floor apt. and lost his tv as a result.
kailua has lots of bugs, but my kapolei house had centipedes. i'm wondering if it's because the area was all cane fields before? also, makakilo had a huge infestation of mice. me thinks that popoki and 'ele'ele need to be let loose there!

Kani,
I killed the TV and the lost the centipede, that was at my place on Maui. There was one cruising my 15 th story ceiling on Nuuanu at the Craigside one evening, I just watched it in astonishment, till I caught it and tossed it off the lanai. I'm sure it survived the fall, those things are pretty much indestructible, and they're gonna go where they want to go. Don't have all those legs for nothing.
My company did finish work on quite a few projects in Kapolei, Kapolei Villages, Aeloa Terrace. One thing I noticed out there was the number of mice, they were all over the place, and how few plants were growing on the vacant land. Evidently from over working the land and growing nothing but sugar cane, they became totally reliant on fertilizers to make anything grow, they had totally exhausted the soil of any natural nutrients. Pretty sad state of affairs, but typical of big business.
And Popoki and Ele'ele have evidently unionized, and are on a work stoppage strike for more fresh Ahi every week. I suspect they are actually catching mice and bringing them into my place to force their hand. I will try to negotiate, have as of yet to meet their union rep, it's probably an io'le!!!

jungohann,
poor tv. i owned a condo in the sakura building--right down the street from you. it was sold and then i bought a house in kapolei--a'eloa. was one of the first on my street. it was a little spooky. still own that house. had to use soil amendment to grow plants and grass.
you might have the upper hand with popoki and 'ele'ele as the price of ahi has skyrocketed over here. and, the holidays are sure to drive the prices even higher!
ahi poke sounds go just about now!

Jeez Kani, you had to go and do it. On my way to Foodland for some shoyu ahi poke with ogo, and if I don't get something for Popoki and Ele'ele, namely fresh ahi, I can probably expect more io'le. They're probably out there herding them up right now.
I really enjoyed my place at the Craigside, faced Trippler, Barbers Point, great breeze most of the time off the Koolaus. One drawback, was downwind of the crematorium at the old graveyard across Nuuanu Ave, and would on occaision have to vacum my lanai because of the ashes. Oh well....
