Default Transporting Furniture from Mainland

I currently live in the Southwest. One of the big issues of moving to Hawaii is what to do about all the furniture we currently own. We do not have a lot of stuff but would like to move some of it as opposed to selling it all and rebuying it in Hawaii.

For 2-4 thousand dollars about what size container could we expect to pack our stuff into?

Also what about vehicles? I assume I would be better off selling my 98' civic but what about a $10000 dollar 2003 CRV?

Thanx!!!

homesick in Hawaii is on a distinguished road
NOt current, but in 03 I moved to Hawaii. I could not have possibly transferred everything I owned. As it was I transfered a minimum of goods and my musical instruments, my moving bill for this was over $5,800.00, one way, arrival was 4 weeks. They drop the boxes off at your location, uncrate and place in your driveway, actual moving into your home or condo is extra.

You might as well plan on selling what you absolutely can rebuy, in order to move an entire household, it would cost upwards of $20,000 or more.

Depending on where your moving from, the Matson line or the Horizon line move cars from Long Beach, Houston and I beleive one other port. I moved two vehicles driven from DFW to Long Beach, $960.00 each. When you get ready to ship cars, be sure that any items not permantenly installed on the car from the factory are removed. Everything is removed from the trunk, everything removed from the Glove box.

All removalable accessories, ie: plastic wind deflectors, bras, big antennae ect are removed or they won't accept it. Be forewarned that they ship both enclosed and open air, so there is no gauranty that your vehicle won't be exposed to the ocean.

Used cars are cheap and plentiful in Hawaii. Unless you have really high-end or antiques (both hard to find in Hawaii), get rid of your stuff. I moved over in '03 as well and shipped 2 cars but got rid of all my big stuff. I brought our remaining belongings by shipping most of it USPS and brought the rest as luggage...sounds wild but it saved us a ton of money. One car was a Fiat Spider and the islands destroyed the Lucas Electrical in short order. The other was a loved and trusted car and it made no sense to ship it over but I did it anyway. A friend of ours saved some of our prime antiques and collectibles in her garage in Hollywood "just in case" we moved back and lo and behold...4 years later they are in my place here in L.A.
