Default Is the Superferry going to make it?

Given that the Superferry turned around over on Kauai and returned to Honolulu, and for the time being won't be allowed here on Maui, I wonder if it will make it? All of the complaints about it injuring whales is kind of absurd, don't Matson ships, Young Brothers tugs pose the same problem? Not to mention the whale watching boats, that poor young boy was killed a while back when the whale watching boat actually hit a whale. Anyways, just a question.

Aloha and okolemaluna

Personally I think it has more to do with simple progress, change, growth - whatever we may individually call it- rather than the environmental impact study.
I am amazed that there are experts( from the Islands, on the advisory board of the Superferry) whose specialty is Invasive Species, or Humpback whales for example. These experts represent us everyday, yet you hear no uproar from the naysayers of the Superferry, for their resignations. Why ?

I agree, if the Superferry is required to perform a study, than the cruise ships, barges, tugs, whale watching boats, on and on, should also be required an enviromental impact study.

Clear minds will prevail I believe .

It's been a while since I've been to a neighbor island...are there coqui frogs on Maui, Kauai or Oahu?

If not, the only way I can totally support the Superferry is if they really check the cars that are allowed on.

I'd hate to face the Maui traffic problems it will likely cause. Esp considering those reports of $12.00/day car rentals!!

And how effective will the two "whale look-outs" really be??

Other than those issues, I agree with the idea that we need options and that the ferry is no different than the cruise ships and whale watching boats in theory.

We shall see!

I hope the ferry makes it. People are out in droves against it for reasons that have no basis in reality. I remember the Hydrofoil that used to travel between the Big Island and Maui in the 70's. It was beautiful but it sure didn't last long. I never got to ride it. Progress is very, very difficult in Hawaii. Many people will come out in droves and fight it every step of the way. I'm going to think positively and just look forward to riding it.

I don't think there's any way all cars getting onto the Superferry could be completely searched. How many times has Hawaiian Airlines had flights from Guam arrive in Honolulu, look up into the wheel wells, and find dead brown tree snakes.I found what I guess was a coqui frog in my place a while back caught it and tossed it. Probably should have killed it, man that little sucker could jump! Just last night there was a lizard on my curtains, spotted on the back with a reddish kind of head, something I've never seen here before, maybe 3" long with a big tail. I recall that recurrent sighting of a very large black cat a bit ago, was seen all the way from Kula to Wailea. And we do have the deer population down in Wailea on the golf course. Oh well, I guess wild rhinos and elephants are next, don't think you could sneak them in though!!

Aloha and okolemaluna

The one negative I can think of is ease of interisland drug trafficking but they could sniff that out...

Shouldn't they have been required to do the environmental impact survery BEFORE they made the ferry happen?

Why should they have to do one at all?

None were required for the new InterIsland cruise ships. None were required for the last new barge that Young Brothers added to their inter-island fleet. None were required for Pasha to start bringing cars to Hawaii from the mainland. None were reqired for Go Airlines when they started interisland. None were required for any new interisland service that I know of.

So how are they justifying it then?
