Stay in Hilo town, you'll save tons in gas costs as well as time. Gas is about $4.50 a gallon (plus or minus) and if your car gets 20 mpg, then it will be $11.25 to drive to and from Hilo. That's $225 per month more you can spend on a rental in Hilo to equate to the same rental in Pahoa. Of course, that's not counting anything for the time you spend, either. Wouldn't you rather have two hours a day to spend at the beach, library, coffee shop or where ever your heart desires instead of driving in traffic?

Also, if you live in Pahoa, you'll be driving to and from Hilo a lot anyway for various other reasons so just save a lot of time and gas and live in Hilo in the first place. Hilo is a comfortable little town. There's enough there to keep you occupied but it's still a slow and sleepy town.

Is the milk fresh or reconstituted? Is it all flown in or are their dairies there?
Do they sell shelf stable milk and juices-can't think of the process name-we called it "nuked"

There are two dairies left in the state and both of them are on the Big Island, although there may be a smaller dairy which has started up on Oahu again. Getting island fresh milk is easier on the Big Island, but it should be available on the other islands, too. The local dairy has started growing their own corn for their cows and they don't use the hormones on the cows to produce more milk so you get hormone free milk. There is also fresh milk brought in from the mainland, too, although I'm not sure if it is flown or shipped. There is also dry milk, canned milk and that nuked stuff you were mentioning, too.

That depends on where you stay and what you do there. Also, what do you consider expensive?

You're in San Diego? I'd imagine it's the same exact thing.

Cheap fastfood is cheap fastfood. Restaurants catering to tourists will be a bit higher than usual.

I'm sure anyone living around Hilo wishes the prices were comparable to San Diego. Figure a 50% hike on fast food - I stopped at the Burger King the other day in Hilo and couldn't believe the prices - instead of 3.60 gas in San Diego plan on 4.20. Oahu is a relative bargain for day to day items compared to Hilo.
