Kani,
what you mean Masa stay pau already? Why is it that all the good old spots for plate lunch are disappearing. We had Azekas and Sudas, (famous for ono chow fun), here in Kihei, now both pau. Was amazed to find that Kitagawa's in Makawao on Maui is still going. Used to go in there for breakfast when working upcountry, old man Kitagawa would be in the kitchen, making up his famous teriyaki sauce, secret ingredient was Crown Royal, a little went into the teriyaki sauce, and quite a bit went into old man Kitagawa!!! I think my favorite thing about Hawaii after all these years is the people, the food, the ocean, and all the old stories.....kahiko kaao.
Aloha and okolemaluna
masa's no mo already. i can't remember when they closed. i think it was earlier this year. a bank or something is going in that location or was it long's? can't remember. still get L&L. but, they are not all the same. just had some beef stew from the one in kaneohe and it was too sweet for some reason?! no mac sal--no good fo you.
regarding mr. kitagawa and the crown royal: i use it in my shoyu chicken recipe--broke da mout. "tastes good" for those of you who don't know.
Many, many friendly people. Some born here, some came a long time ago, some yesterday. But all SO nice and willing to help a newcomer in a million ways.
No one in too much of a rush to stop and talk story for a few minutes.
GREAT shopping in Honolulu.
Rain... that's NOT freezing rain!! or sleet. or slush. or...
Well, I never lived in Hawaii, but I spent a week and a half there, and every morning I would enjoy a freshly made strawberry or strawberry-banana smoothie from a street vendor. I thought that was a great positive...I haven't found fresh smoothies on streetcorners in too many other places.
Location: not sure, but there's a hell of a lot of water around here!

Eh, Koale, I know the feeling all too well!!!!!!! Back in the late eighties, when things were slow here in Hawaii, I'ld go work on the mainland for a few months..Did work in Scotts Valley, Monterey, Milpitas, all in California. Made some good money.......But, the best feeling was when that Hawaiian Airlines DC9 made the turn over the west Maui mountains, final approach into Kahului, I'ld always sit on the right hand side of the plane, get a great view of Kihei and my favorite paddling spots!!!!!!!! Best thing about Hawaii, the feeling you get when you come home!!!!!!! If you could bottle that sensation, and sell it, it would have to be by prescription only!!!! There's the people, the food, the ocean, the weather, can't deny any of that, but that feeling, coming home to the Islands, nothing much compares!!! Moderator cut: edit

I love that when you are stuck at a busy uncontrolled intersection, the driver who has the right of way will actually let you in, because otherwise, you would be sitting there forever. Or when stuck in traffic on the freeway, they will let you cut in. Amazing what a wave will do. That would never happen on the mainland. The tradewinds. Huli-huli chicken plate lunch and shave ice for dessert. Fresh pineapple. Mamas with their babies on surfboards. Leonard Jrs. Malasadas. That my boys whose birthdays are in Feb and March can have parties outside this year. That I never really know what month it is.
Beats the hell out of Detroit in the winter. Unless your a Red Wings fan.
I can agree with you on that!!! I just got back last week and still haven't figured out why I didn't stay! I'm just north of Detroit and the weather S's Big Time! Time to think about moving...
I hear to much negative stuff on this site. How about positive?
Practically no "freeway" chases or "drive-by" shootings.
